"Ambient occlusion" effect useful?

Hey guys,

Does anyone else use the “Ambient occlusion” effect in Source games? You can turn it on in the Nvidia option panel, and it should work with any game that uses the orange box engine. I think the effect makes the some shadows appear more realistic, but i dont see any difference when i turn it on in my Nvidia panel.
Does anyone else use it?

I do. It’s a subtle, but very nice effect IMO.

I made my own nifty little GIF to help show it off. 8D

Source has SSAO? I never knew that. It’s a little overdone in that .gif, but I imagine its customizable.

the difference is most evident when you open a fullbright map.
Its shit and laggy, avoid it.

ooh, nifty

Nope. If Nvidia ever adds an option to customize it, it would be nice. But at the moment what you see is what you get.

It’s not an engine feature itself; it’s part of the nVidia control panel which applies the effect to any games that it can.

I would hope they implement SSAO into the next iteration of Source (which I assume will be with EP3) - although radiosity produces good looking lighting as it stands, SSAO is a relatively inexpensive way to add a bit more depth to scenes.

E: It would probably look much better as an engine feature than an nV control panel override as well…

One day I’ll get round to trying this myself as I want to see if it has the weapon anti-glow glitch that I get in Crysis (on tweaked Dx9 settings)…i.e. the weapon viewmodel has way too much influence on the world around it.

I’ll save you the trouble. It doesn’t.

I have personally found most SSAO to be a pain.
In modding Crysis for our tweak, I was given the assignment to tackle the SSAO and that was the most time consuming and frustrating things to get to work how i wanted.

Let us know the results, I’ve been curious on whether it would work or not on BM.

It should apply the exact same as it does in other Source games.

Well it depends, really. Does BM have a differently named executable than other half-life games?

If so, it won’t work.

I have found with ambient osculation I lose 30 fps.

You, sir, have a shitty graphics card.

When you’re running Halflife 2: Episode Two at 360fps, losing 30 frames per second is a big deal right? (Mind you I lose around 75)

The human eye can only process ~25 fps so there’s literally no point in having a frame rate above 60 unless you have no v-sync.

Well that could be your problem right there.
