Am I the only one...

Opposing Force > Half-Life
(I’m serial)… yeah, really. I personally can’t wait for the remake, the guys are making Blue Shift and Uplink ones as well

Honestly I didn’t like OP4 that much. Even though you come in very late in the timeline relative to HL1, they did a terrible job of carrying over the impression Half-Life 1 gave of the facility being completely overrun with aliens by that point. I also thought that it had terrible flow; it seemed like they just randomly distributed groups of aliens and puzzles throughout some admittedly well-designed maps.

That might just be because I haven’t played it in ages, of course.

You are most likely the only one, but it isn’t like OP4 was BAD per se. It’s more like it wasn’t GREAT.

I really liked the military feel of it and race-X.
The only issue I have with it is being shorter… I also prefer OP’s deathmatch over the original, the weapons are far more interesting

I think an Opposing Force remake would have the potential for awesome gameplay, amazing immersion, and significance to the Half-Life universe, if they were willing to take some liberties with the source material.

The rapid changing of environment kind of throws me off, and some of the paths didn’t feel very “Half-Lifey,” to me. It’s pretty good and fun, but I personally wouldn’t say it’s better than HL.

I didn’t like OP4 that much. But I actually did like Blue Shift. Alot. Half-Life was kind of a grey tone, OP4 was darker imo, and Blue Shift was light and refreshing. I particularly liked how short it was. Calhoun’s only priority was to escape. He did it with the help of the science team, and succeeded. Freeman was the backbone of the whole thing, so his story had to be long. Sheppard, though. Is just kinda…out there.

My first time through, I didn’t understand the whole Race X shit. wtf? Who? What? Why? They were also a pain. Killing them wasn’t enough, because then they’re guns still attack you. They went too far with that, I thought. They didn’t back it with much either. It wasn’t entirely clear on where you were as far as where Freeman was also. The boss battle was confusing, as far as what actually happened, and what it was.

But it was more fun. I’ll give you that. The military feel was awesome, the weapons were much more interesting, and alot of issues with vanilla HL, (Like the shitty MP5 animations) were fixed in OP4. I think Operation Black Mesa has alot to re-define, but alot to keep.

TL;DR - I liked HL1 better.

I really enjoyed OP4, more so than Blue Shift, but I didn’t enjoy even near as much as Half-Life 1 itself. That’s partially nostalgia too though

Still, will be nice to experience the whole thing once it’s out. It’s always interesting to see things from your enemy’s perspective, except Adrian was good  not to mention OP4 has some canonical parts/events, not sure about Blue Shift though.

What are you talking about? Adrian wasn’t good, he shot every scientist he came across if he didn’t need him for something. :retard:

I can’t find that one Critical Miss strip, but let me tell you that you’re NEVER the only one.

So did Gordon. He killed everyone when they had outlived their purpose.

Huh? You mean that I’m not the only one to make that joke?

I never cared for OP4’s singleplayer, but the multiplayer was a major improvement over HLDM and I still play it on a regular basis.

I hate how the reasoning of anyone who likes Opposing Force better can easily be boiled down to:

  • More guns
  • More aliens
  • More militaresque
  • Shorter into

I didn’t like how OP4 basically threw the “bad military” thing HL had going on out the window. Literally the worst thing they did to scientists in that game was knock one down in a room and not let him leave until he “talks”

I thought the game was good though. Not nearly as good as the original game, but it was more HL, from a different perspective, so I liked it.

Agreed. If I was remaking the game and wasn’t obligated to stay faithful to the original, I would definitely integrate the soldier’s scientist-killing mission into the plot and gameplay more.

Oddly enough, I had time to replay Op4 this weekend.

My only two complaints with the SP is that the campaign seemed contradictory to the extra weapons added, and the inclusion of Race X.
While I like the idea of it, Race X’s background and purpose are shady, at best. I honestly do not know if they’re from the same ‘realm’ as the Xenians, or whether they’re working together or against each other. I feel as if they were included for the sole purpose of enemy diversity. Not that there’s anything wrong with that, but I believe the execution could have been better.

And with all those extra weapons added, the game itself just was not long enough to use them all to their potential.

I prefer Blue Shift over Opposing Force usually because the game is a tad shorter, the arsenal is more manageable, your goal is simple, and the enemies are parallel to what you encountered in Half-Life, The Military and the Xenians.

I LIKED op4, buuuuuutttttt it wasn’t equal to Half Life for me. It was great, and I liked parts of it, but Half Life is just Half Life: It’s got that feel to it.
Blue Shift on the other hand…
I hated everything about it. It was complete crap to me. It was more (in my opinion) put in there because they wanted every point of view covered, not to be an integral part of the universe or provide groundbreaking new gameplay.

As with Op4, I feel that a reimagining of Blue Shift that didn’t feel obligated to stay true to the original could be pretty cool. In my head, there’s a really awesome version of Blue Shift with a relatively deep, emotional story.
