Aliens : Colonial Marines

Looks like Gearbox decided to go to the dark side of COD design principles. I sure hope the E3 footage isn’t representative of the final product, but I’d be surprised if it wasn’t.

Sounds like you want a completely new game, and not an aliens game.

So wanting it like the movies makes me a whiner? Guess what, the game is fucking based on the movies, and it has the same locations from the movies. I would agree with you if it wasn’t based on the movie Aliens - but as they said, it’s a sequel, not a re-imagining.

There’s a difference between recycling content for a game, and making a game based on one of the most influential movies ever made. If you really want them to change that much I’m surprised your not turned off by the fact that they still use the same outfits, the same alien design, and the same locations instead of making all new ones.

And no, I can’t hear that little smidge of the M41A in the new sound effect - because it’s not there.

Not one of the Aliens FPS games have ever been directly based on the movie Aliens, most sport their own new storyline and environments. That seems like a pretty big twist if you ask me.

Dude. You’re a fucking idiot.

No, I’m not. You want something that’s not like the movies that’s still in the franchise? Go play AvP 2 - or better yet, just buy a different game with aliens in it. Why not? They don’t take anything from the films except maybe references. That different enough for you?

Fight me. Fight me over my cool as ice way of thinking.

Redundant. The developers have full artistic license with this project, and I’m glad they’re taking it. As a person with a fetish for modernized representations of crummy old shit, I appreciate that kind of stuff.

Alien > Aliens. Of course I’d prefer the Xenomorphs to resemble the original design instead of the toned-down spider monkey ones from the sequel.

This is an addition to a franchise which has a consistent look and feel. However you’ll notice that each installment is different in its own ways. this is because the artist that make it are like me, they know they want something fresh, but they know they have to keep it just stale enough to ward off nitpickers.

It is, trust me. You’re just not hearing it because you’re angry at the change, and afraid of being wrong.

Yeah! So why are you pulling your hair out over it?

Different=Change

Change=Risk

and Risk in this economy most likely isn’t going to be tolerated.
If they change anything about the game they run the risk that it wont sell as well. Better that they make exactly like the money maker movie that its based off of than try for originality. Its sucks I know but thats how business mentality works.

Here’s the thing, they’ve changed plenty!
And yet, you can still tell it’s Aliens. Mission accomplished.
The game is going to make big bucks and satisfy millions of the franchise’s fans, practically the only exception being snobby nitpickers who can’t get over the fact that the rifle has been slightly changed to look and sound like a rifle, or that the shotgun has glowing sights.

It’s okay though, because those people, in not at least their beloved pets, die in car accidents before they get to play the game and form a solid opinion on it.

I never said they weren’t good games, that’s why I suggested them.

I really don’t see why you have such a problem with me wanting the original sound. I’m not “afraid” of change, I mostly prefer things not directly based on a movie I liked anyway - but in this case I happen to want it to be like the movie because it’s one of the few movies I’ve never gotten bored of watching. And a sound can really make or break a gun. You make the sound more realistic it becomes like other guns.

Is that really that bad to want that for one game?

And as far as games go, it IS something new because there has never been a game that actually replicates the Aliens film environments.

Now, if they say, created a NEW Pulse Rifle variant like with a new name but similar look, I’d be okay with it because it’s a different gun. But changing the sound of an established weapon just doesn’t make sense to me.

I dunno, man. I’d get sick of the classic three-round BDDDEEEEOOWWP BRUP BRUP BEDEDEDEEP BDEEEOOOWRRP after about a minute of continuous firing.

UNLESS

it constantly changed tone depending on where you are and what’s around you. then it would be so much like the movie, you’d have to appreciate it.

I agree with that idea. That would be pretty cool.

Some new videos have come out recently. I continue to be cautiously optimistic. One tiny thing: The motion tracker shows the aliens as red blips, whereas in the movie, it showed everything that moved as a white blip. Definitely not a deal-breaker, but in my opinion, it would be way more scary and hectic trying to distinguish between your guys, anything else that happens to be moving, and the aliens in the heat of the moment. Maybe someone can do a mod somewhere down the line. Still think it looks awesome!

I guess this is one of them.

Still think the smartgun sounds kinda generic without the shifting pitch though. But it’s definitely better than the AvP 3 smartgun.

Also, FUCK YES - the motion tracker doesn’t beep when enemies are behind you. That killed all the tension and surprise in AvP 3 and was generally really dumb.

Hit counters? Are they fucking serious?

Now, not that this is going to deter me from the potential of proper Aliens vs Marines without Predator fagging the place up, but does it look a little old? This seems like an outstanding game for the Unreal 2 engine.

EDIT: well single player looks a lot better. I’m watching the second video now.

I noticed the SP definitely looked a lot better too, but it just seems like GBX overall tech-wise are behind the curve - even though they are using UE3. Some of the SP stuff does look pretty good though.

Long ass new article with info: https://www.forbes.com/sites/carolpinchefsky/2012/04/13/gearbox-reveals-details-on-aliens-colonial-marines-prometheus-and-lance-henrikson/

@Bloodshot: Nice read, that article sure hypes things up for me

Ingredients:
1 Cup of Doppler Effect
1 tablespoon of auto-pitch adjust ala Doom 2

I will copy and paste my debates on this matter from the Gearbox forums.

In short, the Pulse Rifle sound was recorded and mixed 26 years ago. It sounds bad. Very bad. It’s not fit for a 2012 game. I’d think of A:CM as more of a Tron: Legacy than an Aliens 2. It’s a sequel, AND a remaining. Theres a lot that was intended to be in Aliens that couldn’t make it due to the time and tech, or could but ended up really dodgy, and this game is owning up to that.

I generally watched aliens and heard the pulse rifle sound way after I’d heard plenty of gun sounds that sound better and more realistic, and frankly I still love it.

IMO the current pulse rifle almost sounds like my shower head when I’m taking a shower

It’s not a game breaker for me by any means, but I still like the old sound. And IMO the first AvP did a great job of modifying the original sound to sound like a powerful gun.

Though I agree on the smartgun sound, it sounded too weak in the film. But I thought AvP 2 had a great smartgun sound (not so much the PR, it sounded like a squeaky high-pitched mess and not an actual gun) and I will say the A:CM Smartgun sound is growing on me

Just think of it this way. It’s my opinion that I like the PR sound. I don’t care if it doesn’t sound realistic, and I don’t care about the nostalgia factor of it. There are plenty of games that I played way before anything aliens that I liked the weapon sounds - but I don’t want them to be in later games. I just happen to like the PR sound a lot regardless of it being realistic - I knew when I watched it it wasn’t realistic.

I don’t want the sound to be the “burst” sound from the movie though. That just doesn’t fit at all for a game where most people are going to be firing on full auto. Unless they can actually make it change depending on the number of rounds fired.
