Alien Swarm: New Free Game from Valve

Well there is surprisingly good teamwork in public games at hard setting, but I can’t do it on insane difficulty probably due to lack of communication and knowing eachothers playstyle. My playstyle for example is:

(MEDIC) Flamethrower + Medical gun + Health pack

I basically torch every alien once then let them burn or let my teammates finish them off, other then that I spend time healing teammates or getting rid of infestations.
Gotta say though, the medical gun is awesome, flamethrower is maybe a bit overpowered as it ‘stuns’ aliens and also kills them over time (the basic alien that is)

It’s interesting how opinion and experience varies. I’ve had people say don’t take the tesla gun because it sucks and isn’t worth it, whilst I’ve played through the hard campaign on public with two medics with tesla and they were actually getting bored of pwning so hard. (Reason for twin medics was due to infestation issues, and related death problems) We actually ended up two medics and two techs on the final mission.

The flamethrower, whilst invaluable, is not overpowered. It does little to contain a rush (like the one at the last checkpoint before the final hack of the final mission) and does little damage, especially when faced with something like the shield bug.

Everything has strengths and weaknesses. The autogun thing (sp weps starting weapon) is very effective, but is no use when your team doesn’t give you a clear line of fire (or if the level doesn’t provide one. It’s very useful for holding the line against a rush, especially if there’s a choke point of some sort to aim at. Godly at keeping corridors clear.

So far this game is pretty damn cool. I played with 2 other friends and we almost beat it on hard difficulty, so far its been pretty easy except for the last level, which we still have to finish.

And I like insane because the earlier levels are actually hard now, though it gets pretty ridiculous at times, It encourages teamwork - and welding doors really makes a difference at that difficulty.

Heh, yeah, it’s good to be sp weapons waiting for a door to come down…

No, during the some parts I drop to 7 fps reveal in the unbelievable power of integrated graphics!

yeah, when my team gets on 2 or more shield bugs in the sewer level my fps drops to 6-12 but it’s around 60 everywhere else, it’s mostly particles i think

yay just spent another good 15 minutes actually trying to get into a game and i end up with 3 polaks and 500 ping.

hurrah to local hosting. fucking unreal. need to expand my steam list for alien swarm…

ooh, I’m up for some of that. I need the campaign on insane for the achievements.

Add me on steam, I don’t host but I have friends who do with good connections.

Also @super luker not for me, for me the only thing that matters is the size of the room :3 everything else is moot, i feel pretty lucky I can even play any games with an integrated gpu

I currently hate special weapons, just because I keep running into so many jackasses that just spray the minigun around everywhere and keeping shooting the whole team in the back. :fffuuu:

I have good internet too I can host unless you live in Australia or something.

My reaction

If it IS anything, im guessing its Johnson’s brain… Im GUESSING its something like in Fallout 3’s Point Lookout DLC… except, Valves version… which is awesome.

Thats pretty cool…

Played a couple of hours tonight, pretty amazing for a free game. Can’t wait to see what it brings for the modding community.

I like the tf2 hat that you get after playing it.

So do I, especially considering it’s my only hat. It looks like shit on some of the characters, because it’s suspended above their head instead of resting on it.

Just managed to complete all seven mission on insane difficulty in public servers. 2 more levels and I reach maximum rank possible (after third promotion), now it’s achievement hunting time.
