Alarming CPU Temperatures

Last week I bought a new computer. As I bought almost every component in the same shop, they built it for me.

Specs:
Intel Core i5 2500
ASUS P8H67-M EVO
RipjawsX 4gb DD3 1333mhz

Now, I’m really worried about temperatures. Specifically, CPU temperatures.

While in BIOS, temperatures start at 45. Then they reach 55 and don’t move anymore.

The CPU is working fine, it’s super-fast and I haven’t had any trouble apart from this. The case is a coolermaster 690 II advance and it has three fans. CPU is on stock cooler.

However, when on Windows (BTW, it’s W7 64 bits), I use speedfan and this is what it tells me:

Everything is super cool except for the CPU sensor that shows me an incredible 92 degrees.

It will occasionally jump, sometimes to 75-ish and back to 90 in a matter of one second.

Is this just a defective sensor or should I start to get worried?

EDIT: Also, being in idle or load state doesn’t seem to have an effect on the temperature displayed.

contacted the store yet? Would could probably get the relevant parts replaced under warranty

If it jumps from 75 to 90 in a second then it sounds like a defective sensor or defective program. Try CPU-Z, see if it gives you a different reading.

You can’t see temperatures in CPU-Z

Oh, my bad. Try realtemp then

Everest shows the same test. Can’t try realtemp now because I’m not at home.

Also, I haven’t yet contacted the store because it’s closed on sundays. I wil give them a call tomorrow.

Have you tried running any stress tests? If that is the real temperature and its not a glitch, then in theory the stress test should bring up the temp even more, which shouldn’t cause any damage since your computer would shut down automatically.

If the temperature doesn’t change during the stress test and your system passes the test, its almost definitely a glitch.

NO EXCUSES :rage: :rage:

I think it’s just bullshit. I have the same processor, and Speedfan tells me that it is on a constant 128 degrees(it doesn’t change). It’s been running fine for the weeks i’ve had it.

don’t use speedfan, use coretemp or pc health menu in BIOS

will do as soon as I get home. thanks.

As I said: While in BIOS, temperatures start at 45. If I leave it like that for a couple minutes they reach 55 and don’t move anymore.

Obviously, Idle =/= load, so I don’t know if I should rule out a temperature problem based on that info alone.

Oops, double post.

There must be something wrong with the CPU temperature reading. If the CPU fan is spinning it can’t be 92C. Since both Core0 and Core1 shows 35C I would say this is the temperature of the CPU. I have a similar problem with my i7 2600. The speedfan CPU reading shows -40C but Core0-Core3 shows 36C. No worries!

Ok i have the same mobo and cpu as you do, ignore that program, check the bios temps and also the supplied ASUS probe program, which will also report the right temp.

Regardless, expect high temps (70 easily under stress) as the stock cooler that comes with this i5 is just a big fucking joke, I´m currently waiting for delivery of an i5 2nd gen adaptor for my water cooler

Well, I just ran a couple stress tests with the Asus diagnostics tool. These are the results:

Coretemp (Tj) always displayed 98° C, both at idle and under stress.

Surprisingly, in speedfan, the temps lowered a lot under stress, and didn’t get over 55-ish C during the test. After the test ended it went back to the 90-ish temps.

Final opinions?

If your cpu really was running @ 92C, the heatsink should be very fkn hot. It would proberly be too hot to touch.
Either way, take it back to them and tell em to get it sorted. Even if its a faulty sensor, you dont need that kinda crap from a new computer. If they tell you to piss off, buy a temp probe and a new heatsink.

(Am I delusional or does speedfan also say your +12v is only supplying 6.81V?)

You are not delusional, but as with the temps, it’s bullshit. Just checked in the BIOS to know for sure and it was within normal tolerances.

As for the temps, I don’t think I can fault the shop, as the temps in the BIOS seem to be accurate, the problem is with third party software.

As I mentioned before, use the supplied mobo software, ASUS Probe, this DOES report the right temps on my PC and I have the same mobo and cpu as you do, if still wrong temps then it is an issue.

Sorry, I thought it was the same as the diagnostics tool.

Well, the Probe shows that the CPU temp is 39° C. Thanks!

No prob, that´s normal, your cpu is fine, but regardless I would suggest putting an aftermarket cooler : )
