A thought about progress updates

No, it shows that there has been a year without news. Which isn’t even true.

How could it EVER lose truth? It’ll be done when it’s done.

@Lethal_Dark
Even though they’re not finished yet, it’s a save bet that they should be pretty far along in the process. Who would let such a baby beast die a few months before its birth? I mean, in a way you’re probably right. Their wrong release expectations, at least to me, show that there has happened something that caused some kind of throwback. We can only speculate about the reasons, but missing a release date by more than a year does not result from bad math skills  . But on the other hand, consider the quality of modern games. Release dates are usually not missed or pushed back too far because the publishers keep the pressure on. The results are unfinished games with limited patch support. The regular confirmation that game development still means a serious amount of work to be done, and as the bm devs are independent, why should they get us and themselves an unfinished product, if you can even call it like this?
I’m not happy with their information policy as well (actually I know the reason but I absolutely don’t understand it), but that’s my problem. But I’m 100% certain this thing will get released some unknown time in the (far) future, whether we will still like it when it’s there or not.

Dear god another of these threads

Will this thread ever die?

Now to finish this off on a high note.
How many of you honestly still give a fuck about the mod, sans 12 year olds who just recently discovered the mod on the web?

Good point.

Remember S.T.A.L.K.E.R?
The potential that game had and the plans the devs had just didn’t materialise when the game was released, simply because they had time constrictions which forced them to release before they were ready.
It wasn’t until the modding community came along and ‘fixed’ the game that it finally became the game it was supposed to be.
Personally, I thought vanilla stalker was a buggy and annoying game. It’s simply not enjoyable being up against enemy soldiers who can see and kill you with perfect accuracy from 100 miles in the dark.
But since adding on several mods (Oblivion Lost being the best) it’s one of my favourite games.

How can you support the Black Mesa devs with that much purpose at this point?

The devs should just write a script that on a monthly basis will randomly choose from some really big pool of phrases (which would include phrases such as “we are still working” or “still alive!” or “NOT DEAD YET”) and then automatically post the result to twitter.

That way, even if the mod dies there will be evidence of work and the skeptics can still be put down.

These kind of threads will keep comming up as long as Black Mesa is still under development.

Trying to fix the “x” bug.
Adding new shaders.
Animation “y” fixed.
Looking for a workaround because of a “z” problem.

Something like that once in a while would be nice though…

Dev: “still working on getting the inbound tram door to open smoothly”
Websites around the world: “zOMFG! They haven’t even finished Inbound yet! 40 years working on the mod and they haven’t even finished Inbound!”

Just sayin’…

Hmm, actually you’re right, I take that back :stuck_out_tongue: .

If they take too long todo one little thing like a door opening, then they deserve to get flamed.

The wiki is just a mess and the information you get from the forums consists of the “ask the devs” thread which is now the size of a small novel.

Imo if you dont have a publicly known release date, you gota show the progress in an obvious way.

Shall we examine the homepage? We have a trailer nobody watches, some screenshots nobody looks at, the latest posts which everyone uses and a FAQ for the rest of the page.

They don’t “gota” do anything.

I think it’s nice to know that the mod is not going to be released within the next two months. It IS an update on the mod status, and it possibly means that at least one development task is not due for another two months (I’d venture that this is internal beta and/or finishing touches and of course bug fixes, -but this is me reading more into Catz statement and projecting my mod development process on the black mesa’s one).

Ofcourse it could also mean that real life issues prevent any of the devs to focus on the mod for the next few months.

I’m still hoping for a mid 2011 release.

Sometime between March and July*, that “worthless” [color=Black][COLOR=White][COLOR=White]homepage will have a VERY useful/popular addition.

And as said above, they don’t need to do jack shit. They don’t even need to finish this mod. They simply want to. All of us should be very grateful.

ITT: “devs suck balck meas never gunna be relesed y u no update?”

Later: “Black Mesa Released - Download Page Here”
Same peeps: “OMG, GOTTA DOWNLOAD NOW!”

they said last december they’ll release bms soon, everyone speculated march as a worst case. And now here we are in almost 2011…

so those 2 months can mean 2 months, but even 2 yearz…

but remember! the important thing isnt the release date, the important thing is that will BM be as good as HL. I wait some more months, if they need it to complete the game.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
