A Rival To Source's Facial Animation

couple it with euphoria and we have the most realistic animations EVER (in a game)

Woooow, this looks pretty fucking awesome to me. That must be a hell of a fucking game we have there!

This engine already has euphoria, you fool.
Have you ever played GTA4?

Actually, Rockstar is only publishing this one, since it’s not developed internally by them, but by an Australian team called Team Bondi, so I suspect they’re using their own engine for this one.

looks exactly like the GTA4 engine.

Well, who knows.

I know, hombres.

Much better facial animation, though. We should make a thread about this impro- oh wait…

honestly though source doesn’t even come close to that level of realism in terms of facial animation

but they aren’t even creating them instead they capture directly from actors which seems kinda lazy

Exactly, it’s not rendered on the fly, so you can’t compare it.

It’s just the technology they’re using to make the cutscenes. I wish they’d take a Mass Effect approach to it, but it’s to late now I’m sure.

One of the big points of the game is that you have to work out whether characters are telling the truth or not through their facial animations and body language. I’m guessing it will have a Mass-Effect style with pre-recorded reactions and scripted consequences depending on how your react to situations.

Also, Sersoft, I wouldn’t call it lazy, that’s like saying using ragdolls is lazy because they couldn’t be arsed to make death-animations. If it adds realism and immersion, continue to use it and improve it I say. :stuck_out_tongue:

It’s rendered, in 3D, from the shapes and movements captured. It’s not generated on the fly.

You’re retarded

no u

Seriously though, the “old film” is a horrible excuse for having shitty sound quality while emulating everything else to the best of their ability.

So true.

Yeah source has an excellent facial animation system, however put side by side with this new technology, this definitely looks a lot better. It makes mimicking reality a lot easier for game developers, and if that’s not moving forward, then I don’t know what is. And the body animations aren’t distracting. At least not to me. They aren’t jaw-dropping like the faces, but they’re perfectly fine.

This makes me think of what would happen if crytek, rockstar, and valve got together to make one game. what a hypothetical.

The persons inside “old films” were still real so they had the same mimic like people in new movies. @Medevilae: See how retarded your comment was?

Medevilae is right. If they want the cutscenes to seem like old movies, they should use at least subtle filters. As is, it just looks like they were lazy with the ambient sounds, which they probably were.

I’m not even going to try to understand the above comment, by the way.

The facial animations here look fucking great. The nuance that comes through the acting is going to add a lot to this game.

I wasn’t expecting to see John Noble.

The facial animation isn’t particularly new or interesting, but they do seem to have made good use of wrinkle maps.

Exactly.

Don’t know why people are busting their asses to defend Rockstar’s laziness… lol it’s not your game

No one cares about gameplay and good music nowadays, all its about is graphics, crappy storyline and multiplayer.
