1:35 scale plastic armour models

Agreed then  So, the obvious question is; who do we think make the best quality kits? For me it’s Tamiya, AFV Club and Dragon, but then I’m biased towards armour model manufacturers!

Tamiya is a fine manufacturer of aircraft too. I hear good things of Dragon iirc.

I’d probably say Tamiya is the finest, though there’s Hasegawa and another company who’s name I forget…

I used to love making scale models a few years back now…one of those things you do with your dad growing up I 'spose  I’ve meant to get back into it, but with uni, who has the time. I had a relapse a few years ago when I made one with my cousin, probably the best I’ve done too. Imma try and find pictures of it.

t’was an attack helicopter, I forget which model. painted the HUD buttons on with the tip of a cocktail stick

EDIT: FFFFUUUUUUck you blurry picture;

From that angle, I’d say it looks like a Comanche attack helicopter, the stealthy future replacement for Apache. Nice job on the cockpit btw.

@ m4rek, I’ve never built any Hasegawa kits, but I have heard good things about them, so maybe, one day I’ll try one and see for myself just how good they are.

I’ll probably be getting a Hasegawa B17 if I can get hold of one; this Revell kit is a disgrace. Not built any either, again only heard good things (though I trust my dad’s judgement on kits - he’s been doing it a lot longer than I have). Actually only built shitty kits so far myself, but as you can see from the wall I have a few good brands stacked up once I learn all the stuff I need on the crap kits. The kits from that wall that are mine: The small Cat, the wildcat, the small missouri, and the really big spit.

Oh, and based on the stubby wings, I’d have to say it’s the Apache itself.

That actually makes perfect sense, cut your model making teeth on poorer quality models, to learn all the skills required, then put those skills to good use with higher quality kits.

Not wanting to start an argument on here, but the reason I think it’s a Comanche is the overall, angled shape of the fuselage and the shape of the sensor housing in the nose. Plus the lack of bulges in the sides where the main undercarriage is mounted. But hey, I’m more than willing to be proven wrong!

Ok, key question here… Is it complete?

Ok, now we really are going off topic!! But here are a couple of pictures I dug up, the top one shows the Comanche’s angled fuselage sides and nose sensor mounting, the bottom one shows the Apache’s vertical fuselage sides with side bulges. I know the model is incomplete, thus making 100% accurate identification difficult, but based on these pictures (even taking the viewing angles into account), I still think it’s a Comanche.

haha! It was a Comanche guys

Btw yes, it was finished.

It looked pretty good when done, but I don’t have many decent pictures of it…I had to stop it getting destroyed as it was going back to the other side of the world with my cousin. Incredibly, it remained unscathed, using an ingenious method in which it was suspended in the middle of a lunchbox, in one piece. :fffuuu:

Nice One! Shame there’s no other pictures, judging by the work you did in the cockpit, the rest of the model should be just as good.

fyi, the problem with the horrible seams behind the rotor was solved. It wasn’t an expensive kit

I have currently have models built of a Huey Helicopter, a Tank (not sure what type, came with a kit to motorize the treads but of course the Motor was shot. currently stripping loose parts off to add to a tin of army men that I plan to give to my little bro for Christmas), H-arms Gundam, some Red and White gundam with a grapple-thing, a 1966 ford Mustang Hardtop, a Boeing B-17 bomber, a Naboo N-1 starfighter (in poor condition, then again the kit sucked anyway), an Imperial AT-ST scout walker (with custom Battle Damage),F4U-1 Corsair (with crappy-attempted battle damage and open canopy), F-14 (Half-assed attempt at Decal placement, screwed up the landing gear bay), a 1964 Mercury Marauder(unfinished), a BMW Z8 (paint pending, attempting to make door w/hinge), a 1969 Mercury Cougar (unknkown Progress), and a wright flyer (taken some damage in the last couple years, nice feature:came with thread for cables).

I’ll try to get some pics tomorrow. As I said, Progress has come to a Shuddering Halt due to supply costs.

What did you use as filler? I have a few models that could do with a little work to solve some ugly looking seams, but I’ve never been 100% sure what to use.

Can’t wait to see some pictures of all those. If your plastic models are anywhere near as good as your papercraft models, they should be quite something

When I was 10-ish (hurrhurr Sean Connery at Wimbledon), my mum gave me a model of a Tiger tank. 10 minutes, 3 pieces and a lot of glue later, the entire thing was destroyed. My mum slapped me and I never touched these things again.

So muchos respect for you! They look really great.

I promised Pics and I delivered! Here’s Pics!

Here’s the tank I’m Stripping Down (loose parts that could come off and present a choking Hazard) to add to a gift-tin of Army men for my little Bro

Here’s that Huey

And a shot of the Tail of that chopper

H-Arms (and a lego minifigure between his legs XD)

A shot of the ā€œbattle damageā€/oil leakage that i tried to put on the F4U-1 corsair

Her underside (OOH:3)

Part deux! (they wont fit on one page, I’m afraid)

The 1966 Ford Mustang Hardtop (completed with my sister way long time ago)

Interior shot of said car (had to stick the lens into the car to get this shot)

ATST

Some battle damage

and the wright Flyer

I’m almost certain modeling or hobby shops would carry Bondo (auto body filler) or maybe some sort of other putty geared towards models…I know Games Workshop makes a putty specifically for fixing parts on Warhammer pieces, something similar is probably what you’re looking for.

my big baby: the Boeing B-17 bomber

Hopefully you can see a bit of detail inside this pic.

and her ball turret

EDIT
Man, two years later and I can already Spot Problem-bits GALORE on some of these miniatures.
Parts glued on wrong, paint smears, overpainted areas, underpainted areas missing parts, ETC. if I were to try building a plastic model THIS year, I would probably do it better.

Thanks, I’ll be sure to check out Games Workshop for said filler!

@ bigfan421, those are some nice pictures, I especially like the Wright Flyer, I love it when modellers add the stringers between the wings on biplanes, it demonstrates a good attention to detail! I also like the Mustang interior and the Huey.

Hehe, liking the B17. Unfortunately my kit is perhaps half as detailed as yours, so it’s twice as much work to even match yours… And as you say, there are lots of errors in that alone xD

I’ll see if I can get you a few shots of my dad’s B24, that thing is a beauty.

For the filler, just look out for Plastic Modelling Putty, made by someone like Revell… (I use a Revell filler)
