i like to stop in on the ol’ Ban Log just to read the witty “reason for ban” descriptions. Problem is, if you ever get banned yourself, you’ll never get to read it unless you sign up a new username. When i got canned, i never got to see WHY. Only that i was banned. Every time i tried to log in, all i could see was the “YOU BEEN BANNED” page. if i logged out i couldn’t access the ban log. So for a whole 5 or 6 days i couldn’t look it up. i had NO idea WHY i got banned.
Turns out i wasn’t even that involved. i just got caught the end of the banhammer swing because i’d accidentally started a massive off-topic thread derailment. i made a joke comment at the end of an on-topic post, got called out on it so i tried to explain the punch line. Temporary derailments happen all the time, even devs do it. So i spent the whole time trying to figure out, “What did i do!?”. :aah: There was no way of knowing because i didn’t see the problem before it happened. The infraction simply wasn’t apparent to me.
i think i posted 2 or 3 times in that massive derailment, trying to steer the conversation back to questions and answers and trying to bring the off-topic discussion to a close. i went to bed that night, went to work the next morning and came back to the board a day or two later and saw i got banned. Hell if i knew why though. shrugs

It says the reason on the page that says you’re banned. Both times I got banned I knew exactly why.

Also, you can delete your cookies which will let you in to view the ban log.

i’ve got Firefox instructed never to save any passwords, cookies, certificates, etc. For me it was just as easy as restarting Firefox. i was able to browse around the forums but i couldn’t post anything. To add to my confusion, JamesKane removed all the off-topic posts so there was no record of my alleged wrong-doing. i never thought to check this particular thread for updates on a mass banning until after i was unbanned. i didn’t even know i wasn’t the only one!
i’ve never been banned by any forum. i felt so violated. :’(
