The reason I think that is, is because back in the day many people only had ONE T.V. This meant that what one person was watching everyone was watching. So cartoons meant mostly for kids still had to have some things that were entertaining to adults.
Now a days everyone in the family has a T.V. so kids and watch unfiltered garbage all day because no one else in the family cares. Its easier to write and requires lower quality animation, so very few children cartoons get the effort because why bother making gold if garbage sells for the same price?
I completely agree, when i was 4, i liked cartoons for there wackyness. When i grew, a bit of nostalgia came up and i started watching those shows again.
The cartoons before the new millennium had a lot of silenced political/satirical humor embedded in the story, setting, and plot.

The cinematic sequences in Metroid: Other M. They are so, so very bad in that anime kind of way. Anything that is supposed to be significant and/or meaningful is FORCED, like a frustrated retarded child trying to cram a square block through a hole in the shape of Mona Lisa with all his retarded might. Also, the translation was awful and horrendously non-colloquial, and the voice actors were bad on their own.
Also they were unskippable.
