Forge.
What’s HL “thing”? What’s HL2 “thing”? Yet they have the same amount of fanboys who tell everyone it’s “unique”.
I mean what does Halo: Reach bring to the table that isn’t already in one of its predecessors?
HL2 brings a very high level of attention to NPC’s ability to express emotion, character development and storytelling, tied to a rather so-so first-person shooter. Half-Life 1 had a lot less in the faces and expression department, as well as some less effort in the acting and script and flow of the game, but for its time it had a fairly realistic and serious premise with a moderately interesting set of enemies, and rather generic weapons.
Ah, Reach.
I don’t really care.
It’s been explained in detail about 50 times now. The single player is squad based (probably like Republic Commando) and the multiplayer has loadouts for abilities like invincibility, invisibility, speed, jet packs, etc. If you still don’t get it, wait a few weeks and rent the damn game because I don’t think it can possibly be spelled out with any more clarity.
A highly refined loadout system, and tighter balance really. That’s it.
But that’s not the point. The thing that draws me to Halo is the fact that it’s every FPS that ever existed condensed into one with the skin pulled off. All flaws in gameplay are ironed out with each installment. It’s not meant to be a different experience each time, it’s meant to be an improvement and expansion upon the last. Plus, Halo, whether you like it or not, has the BROADEST core gameplay ever. Vehicular combat seamlessly blends in with ground combat, and the gametypes are so customizable, you don’t even have to treat the game like an FPS.
Wanna race? Race.
Wanna have a monster truck ralley and drive other opponents off of a floating platform to fall to their death? do it.
Wanna have a gametype where everyone but one guy is standing on a giant floating jenga tower and has to dodge props thrown at them by the one guy? Do it.
Wanna have an obstacle course that requires perfect jumping and flawless grenade skills? Do it.
Want regular deathmatch? do it.
Want DeathRUN? do it. (in fact, that gives me some ideas for ForgeWorld)
Want to sculpt random shit out of building blocks in forge? Do it. (imma make a huge stone sculpture of a face)
Fuck, you want to play duckhunt with one team being launched out gravlifts and the other sniping them out of the air? Fuck, go ahead.
Halo 3 is the most customizable and variable FPS on the console market. Halo Reach will have even MORE options. Hands down. No contest. That’s why I laugh when people say “hurr durr it’;s teh same gaylooo” Because the game might as well be 30 games in one. I’ve played some custom gametypes in Halo 3 that I swear could be worth ten bucks if it was a game on it’s own.
You see, the core is for better or worse the depiction of a “flawless” fps sandbox. I say this in quotes because it’s subjective. All weapons have a niche and a purpose, and any one could beat another. A pistol could beat a shotty if the conditions were right (AND ONLY THEN). Everything is tuned just right so that only the better player can win (as long as no one spams. Sadly, there’s no cure for spam)
Couple this with the fact that you can tweak every last thing about that balance to fit your needs, and you’ve got a winner.
Also, there are only a few FPSs games that have the conditions right for trick jumping. There’s Half life 1, quake 1-3, the unreals, and…you guessed it, Halo. I’d say any console game that allows for trick jumping is pretty damn cool. Also, I recommend this vid to everyone, not just Halo defenders. Some of the shit in the vid is mind blowing regardless of what you think about the game that it takes place in.
It’s about the PLANET reach dude, read the books
He wouldn’t do that. Cuz teh books basd on te videogaemz B tez stupidzzz.
TFOR is pretty good though But there’s no reason for a non-Halo fan to read it. Why get involved in an extended universe that doesn’t concern you?
The Descent novels were decent enough. I even e-mailed a compliment to the author, and he replied!
…wait wat.
Ugh, time really flies by when you read 9 straight pages of flamtastic flaming. Really, I like both Halo and Half Life, don’t get why people can’t like BOTH. I can understand if you have a valid point, which a lot of people just didn’t have.
Also, jesus did this thread grow.
I like both, but when people tell me I make something out to be godsend (which I do not), and then make something that isn’t godsend out to be godsend, I get pissed.
I like the HL series for what it is, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t try to be other things and fails. Same with Halo.
Halo is a video game.
Welcome to an extremely limited version of GMOD. Honestly, is there anything new to gaming in this game?
Also, final cutscene and fighting looked terrible. Animations just looked weird, and the voice acting was less than inspiring.
Co-op Map editor = Mod that’s main intention is to be a playing field for fucking around…
k.
The point of my post wen’t WAY over your fucking hipster Jew fro head.
Every time I mention any reason why I like halo, you come with the same Boring, repetitive comebacks of how Halo did nothing for gaming. Did I say it fucking did? highlight in my post where I say “Halo was revolutionary” or any fucking thing like that. Show me.
I agree about the last cutscene… Except [COLOR=‘Black’]if you think the animation work of N6 on the ground pushing the elites off him was bad, you are a fucking moron. That’s the best damn keyframe work I’ve ever seen. Every detail was perfect down to the toes spreading apart when the feet planted themselves on the ground. Plus… idk if you guys ever caught on…but… Intentional camp is intentional.
wait…wait a minute… You’re the Crysis fan. You have no room criticizing any other game’s acting, man. Or animation for that matter… or cutscene cinematography in general… Nvm bout the whole thing.
Full yet?
Do you honestly think I care about the story of Crysis? The only thing I appreciate about the cutscenes is that they were first person, which was nice, but beyond that, the acting was bad.
Anyway, Gmod is a coop map editor if you are going to define forge as such. You can play around with large building blocks in premade maps, and make fun game modes. Its a simple as that.
All I’m saying is that the forge is massively over-rated. Its not necessarily aimed at you, but at the idiots whose first reaction when I say I map is “Oh, you play around in forge?”, and don’t even know about GMOD. I may be overly harsh on it, but those kinds of people deserve it.
In any case, all of this is a moot point, as its ultimately irrelevant how good the forge is until its actually released. Then we wait five minutes for any unseen features to be modded into GMOD.
So basically, Halo: Reach is only getting the press it is because it’s the next Halo game, and not because it’s something radically different and new from the series?
It’s radically different for the people that are seasoned to the established formula, yes. But if you’re a casual goer you wouldn’t notice much change.
Does that even really matter when Gmod is not on the console?
Kind of like how people shot diarrhea from their eyes when they switched Counter-Strike over to the Orange Box engine?
Yeah.
Yes, that’s exactly it actually.
