I don’t find that Spain was playing better to be honest… efficiency is way more important than just attacking in Football.
I actually thought that game was fairly similar to this year’s Champions League semifinals between Barcelona and Inter. Barcelona playing way aggressive but being utterly useless when it came to scoring and finalizing their plays, while inter just played defensively and waited for opportunities to counter-attack (they didn’t do that much though since they would qualify with a tie).
Switzerland defended themselves really well and were able to seize the opportunities they had. I’m pretty sure they scored that goal on the first chance they had, and they could easily have taken it 2-0 if that other shot had been a little bit to the left (and that would be an amazing goal ).
Spain, in the other hand, attacked during most of the game, but the closest they got to scoring was that long kick by Xabi Alonso. So, Spain played more offensively? Yeah. Better? Not really. The better team ends up winning anyway (unless the ref fucks something up ), and Switz was definitely the better team that game.
I still think that Spain is a serious contender for taking this World Cup though. I doubt they won’t qualify through group play, and sad thing is they’ll probably qualify in second place and face Brazil right off the bat. At least it should make a great game to watch I guess ; the one game we all wanted to watch at the Confederations Cup but didn’t.
Spain played better, re-watch the match and you’ll see, and they played the best Soccer in this world cup by now, Iniesta is a beast
And nop, the team that plays better doesn’t always win, haha, do you even play or watch soccer, or only during the world cup? do it often and you’ll know what I’m talking about
That’s not true, for example, Germany played way better than Spain.
Spain didn’t even play good soccer. They had ball possesion but not much more; every time they neared switzerland’s penalty area, they didn’t know what to do with the ball.
it seems to me that what he was saying is that playing better = winning. if you won, you have played good football because, well, you won.
But no, you win by scoring goals, and that doesn’t mean you’ve played better during the match, and I’m not talking about the winner team, I’m just talking about the one that played better
You just have a way different view on what “playing better” means than I do.
And yeah, I’m an avid football fan, so I watch any regional/national tournaments around here, and also Libertadores/America Cup/Champions League/Euro Cup and etc.
Football is about scoring goals, not making shiny dribbles or long passes. They are more amusing to see, yes, but efficiency is what qualifies as “good football” to me, not the “prettiness” of their plays. Although I do enjoy watching that sort of play (I’m a big fan of Ronaldinho for his style of playing, for example), if it serves no good purpose, as in it doesn’t help your team to score/win, I find it to be pretty pointless, and doesn’t qualify as “playing good” to me at all. And to be honest, Spain’s football wasn’t even that amusing to watch to me. They missed several passes and, like acade said, they didn’t do much more than just pass the ball around when they actually came near to Switzerland’s penalty area.
Italy’s team from the last World Cup is a very good example of an efficient team that doesn’t necessarily play it for the looks. They had no big international star in their teams (not one like Messi/Ronaldinho/Zidane anyway, who are known for their distinct playstyles), but they still outplayed Zidane’s France (enough to tie them for penalty shootouts at least) and Ballack’s/Klose’s Germany to win it all.
Basically, if a team wins a match, and they deserved it (as in the referee didn’t “help” them in some sort of way), they are the better team to me, regardless of how many bicycle kicks and 60m passes the other team managed to pull off.
On topic: Sad for the Bafanas to lose 3-0, kind of a long shot them qualifying now, but I still hope they pull it off . Also Argentina vs South Korea in a few hours should be a great match. Messi to do big things at this one I hope.
US losing 2-0 to Slovenia right now… I actually thought they had it in them this year after the Confederations Cup. Looks like I was wrong…
Also big lol @ Germany’s coach. Guy leaves a VERY poor Podolski in the field but takes out his 2 best players (next to Klose who got redcarded) Müller and Özil… I mean, it was a good move to put in Cacau for a better offense, but taking out Özil/Müller over Podolski? Really? The guy had just wasted a penalty kick and 2 easy shots right in front of the goal… what a moron.
Also France out = Brazil’s tournament… fact. Last 4 cups we either won or got eliminated by them Frenchies .
Spoke too soon… they’ve just tied it and even were on top, but the referee nulled a legit goal from them. The US is actually looking strong this year o_o
