The wiki says that almost all military vehicles are being changed from their originals in Half Life to their U.S. Marine counterparts in Black Mesa. The LAV is replacing the M2A3 Bradley IFV, and the F-16 Fighting Falcon is being replaced by the AV8 Harrier II. Why is this? Is there some reason to think that the Marines were the only branch of the military involved in the Black Mesa cleanup (that conjecture would be contradicted by the fact that the AH-64 remains)? Does anyone think the Harrier looks cooler than the F-16? If you had F-16s you could have them breaking the sound barrier to produce sonic booms and that would be badass. These seem like unnecessary changes to the story.

the thing that matters to me is: do they make a fabulous explosion when I hit them with an RPG
I’m not a war nerd but I think the Harriers should be replaced with AH-something “wart-hogs” because they are typical close air support. The only advantage a Harrier has is the potential for some cool animation sequences because it can hover (see MGS2).
also changing the type of vehicle doesn’t change “the story”
I’m guessing they were changed because they’re cooler.
Also, an F16 breaking the sound barrier would be counter productive, because you probably wouldn’t even see it flying by then.
HECU ≠ U.S. Marine Corps
Since we’re talking about changing the vehicles, I’d like to see the BM loader robot, the crystal cart, and even HECU tanks and APCs use the locomotion system from the little/big dog research project. Especially with the little dog, you can see how it could be adapted for a large vehicle like a tank.

The devs chosen to make somehow the HECU a branch of the USMC (I don’t remember quite well but valve said sometime HECU grunts are marines) and that’s why the change. Only the apache wasn’t changed because of its iconic figure in HL (marines counterpart is the cobra).
If they wanted to stick with the original HL design, the HECU would be rather a special force within the US army and using the air force assets for CAS (close air support).
The only problem for me is that the LAV can’t unload grunts so the scene in ST where a bradley breaks through a wall and pours grunts will drastically change…
It wont be anything to worry about really, sure they are small differences but when your in game and a tank is firing at you and your hiding behind a wall, are you really going to focus on the fact the Bradley is a little different from the LAV from the original game. In hl1 the vehicles were barely recognizible as anything anyway due to the lack of modelling. Im not worried about it really.
If anything we should be worrying about the alien grunts…after all the developers are using alien clones from species 8764 and not species 8765b like the original. Everyone knows species 8764 can only fire hornets at 45 mph while species 8765b can fire hornets at 60 mph with 0.001% better tracking.
Honestly, why did the developers do this? It makes no sense.
Jeez, all they do is remake Half-Life 1 completely for free and without any kind of rewards in mind and then they go and change the vehicles so that the game with aliens isn’t realistic enough for me!

Devs, I am dissapoint. All your models are high poly and in the original they wern’t. you are breaking the half life cannon and should all feel terrible.
