Samurai Champloo, Gundam 00, Cowboy Bebop and FLCL are definitelly worth checking out.
Japanese anime is just like american TV; there are some good ones, but most of it is utter shit; even the ones that end up being popular.
It seems to be very different for each person, as many people in the thread have suggested series that I’d like nothing more than to bury all copies far beneath the earth, E.T.-style.
Serial experiments Lain, Texhnolyze, Kino’s Journey.
Different enough from the other suggestions, katana?
Death Note and Full Metal Alchemist.
Sounds like the promotional tagline for Brokeback Mountain. :fffuuu:
But it’s awesome.
I liked that as far as I watched Cowboy Bebop they never BS’d you into following some long story of a character’s tragic past, the mistakes he made and some guy he always wanted to kill. It was just a lot of well-done stories involving the characters.
Also, contrary to popular belief Spike isn’t really the main character. Jet is. Anyone wants to fight about it, fine by me.
Actually, there was one I started watching recently called Monster that’s turned out pretty well. What I like; it’s a mystery story that never leaves any one question hanging too long. Far too many ‘storyline mysteries’ (who was that masked man?) get answered like 5 seasons later, or worse they’re just forgotten about as some vague “a wizard did it” situation. I ran out of freely-available online episodes, so now I’m looking around for somewhere to get the others.
anime blows tho and is for smelly weirdos. sorry folks
It should appeal to you then.
gahh… the tables… turned…
YOU ARE MINE NOW HERETIC
I concur, Scooby Doo was a highlight in the realm of animation.
Well, I’ll exclude manga since you specifically said anime.
One Piece
Berserk (only goes through the 13th manga volume, though)
Hunter X Hunter (the current arc has yet to be animated)
Cowboy Bebop
Monster
FLCL
Yu Yu Hakusho
Fist of the North Star
JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (only the 3rd series is animated, though)
Hellsing (the OVA)
Dragonball/Z
I might have some more later.
Seinin seems to have a hard time getting animated because of its content but there is quite a bit of hidden gems. I suggest you begin reading manga if you haven’t already.
HAHAHAHAHA OMG RAM I LOVE YOU
also
DRAGONBALL Z[/SIZE]
Just no.
Why not? I’ve only seen the first two and haven’t read the manga but it seemed pretty good to me.
Yeah, I haven’t seen the OVA, but it is renowned for being better than the other series.
Japan is stunted in all art forms.
Genndy Tartakofski rules.
I’m not hating on Genndy Tartakofski, but that’s an incredibly ironic statement considering his most well known work is a highly anime-derivative cartoon series about a Japanese samurai.
I’ve heard from a few different sources that Paprika is a good anime although I gave it a pass due to it being anime.
How is Samurai Jack anime-derived? The fact that there’s a somewhat-watered-down and shallow Japan theme going on?
Tartakofski is only one of many, many extremely talented cartoonists in America. Japan is just kinda incapable of really varying style too much, and their writing and dialogue and everything else are just embarrassing.
