VHS vs Betamax

Which was the best format, in your opinion?

W00T I think I found a prehistorical topic!! (or topic-creator).

I never had a Betamax (guess to old for me) I did had a VHS so my vote goes to VHS.

Still who would wanna use a VHS these days anyway?

I don’t even know what betamax is… so VHS gets my vote.

VHS was like the Blu ray v HD battle, and VHS won, although, Betamax was actually better quality, just less popular and used a different style of tape.

HAHA i just did some quick googling and apparantly Betamax was a Sony format. Funny since they have a looong history of formats never being adopted (bluray is really one of their biggest and only successes)

Never used Betamax but used VHS a lot.

and i too are glad there over.

VHS, annoyingly I still have alot of old tapes simply because I can’t find a DVD version for most of them.

Laserdisc

Get with the times, fgts

Curiously enough, the Laserdisc was invented earlier than the tape formats.

wasn’t it the porn industry that chose VHS due to it being cheaper, thus the rest of the market went with VHS too.

Yeah, that’s how the legend goes.

I wonder if that also influenced the victory of Blu-ray.

I don’t think so, Blu-ray was pushed a lot by Disney. Disney doesn’t really like porn for some reason.

I also think it has something to do with the fact that the PS3 had a built-in bluray player, it helped spread the format.

And overall, the Blu-ray was superior to the HD-DVD.

strange, their actresses always seemed to have a knack for it

And porn doesn’t like blu-ray. The porn industry hates HD because they have to use more makeup and get women with better skin. True story.

Anyway, Betamax and VHS were almost identical in resolution, and when you think about how shitty most tvs were until the early '00s, it really didn’t matter which one you used.

The professional grade Betacam tapes were kick ass though. We still used those as our primary backup format for reality show footage as recently as 2008.

Ramirezoid pictures it all.

VHS.
