This is quite off topic but Yahtzee finally decided to review Half Life!

What a coincidence…

I was very disappointed by the horrible voice acting, and to learn it was final. I have no doubt it will sully the experience for a lot of people. I don’t really understand why they made the choice to waste development time recording new voices that won’t even come close to the originals.

The fact that the new voices have better sound quality than the old voices is completely irrelevant if they sound really bad, HD voices won’t change that. Then people bring up the issue the issue of copyright. I can recall a lot of mods for HL2 that have HL1 content and Valve never complained. Even then, what could have been done is syncing the original HL1 voices to the characters, but not releasing the game with the sounds requiring user to get the sounds from HL1 or alternative sources. Some will say it’s unprofessional, well it’s a mod, not a retail game.

Over all though, I thought the graphics and gameplay look pretty polished. I’m sure it will look a lot better when we actually play it.

Black Mesa has a much expanded script. It would’ve been weird to mix the old voices with the new ones.

lol, what he said about HL and modern shooters I used to think all the time when I was younger, and before I actually beat HL1.

Man seven new pages just in today, and yesterday I saw the amount of active viewers hit 195.

Ever since that video came out it has been a clusterfuck, I can see why the devs wanted its release to be controlled.

Some people can’t grasp the concept of a re-imagining.

Sure it might be weird, but I think nothing ruins the immersion more than poorly voiced lines. As far as an extended script, I would rather have fewer well voice lines than many poorly voiced ones. I don’t think most people found a lack of dialog to be a problem with the original HL1. I can understand the devs wanting to take liberty with this remake and adding their own personal touches, but replacing the iconic voices with poorly voiced ones is not the way to do it.

Just fucking listen
I mean, come on.

Ugh, I hate that guy.

Hey, I can’t find any of those old videos I used to watch on the site. I recall they talked about game elements and stuff. A few examples were how the medium could be taken more seriously than it is and topics, while not alike in meaning, similar to that.

Also, am I the only one who didn’t mind the jumping puzzles? I always thought they were so simple and were ok.

I fucking love jumping puzzles. I love first person obstacle courses in general.

“Poorly voiced” is your opinion. They sound okay to me, especially considering they were done in that fashion intentionally. And the rest of the voice acting I’ve heard sounds great. I’d certainly prefer this to having jarring, low bit-rate sound clips standing out against the high quality audio of the rest of the mod.

The Escapist tried to steal their money, and they moved to Penny Arcade TV.

I am blown away! Fapping to Black Mesa is going to be much more enjoyable then I previously thought.

Damn. I didn’t know that, thank you!

Googles stuff

Case in point, right there.

No shit… I thought I was just gonna check in real quick but now I’m fucking drained from reading this entire thread. :o

Judging from some of the low volume bits and pieces, it did sound much better than the grunts voice acting. I still think the grunt voices sounded terrible though. Hopefully most of the voice acting will be good in the final game.

Intentionally or not, a lot of people were not pleased with the way grunt’s voices sounded. I mean, maybe they could up the radio effect more to mask the poor voices. Nobody said the original HL was poorly voiced.

Katana works on Black Mesa, what the heck? Although his examples are kind of unrefined and I know I spend a lot of time on faceposer scenes I create that look extremely realistic [video at bottom].

But anyway. Black Mesa 1080p https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbwAG9NFrtk Not my channel.

I also wonder if Katana realized the concept of nondisclosure?
Although I am semi-breaking that here because this scene is from Ross Scott’s upcoming machinima.
Car Gas Scene

Very nice. I was going to pass this stuff up until I saw that they aren’t going to do any more media.

To be honest, this FAR exceeds my expectations. The voice acting is probably the lowest point, but seeing as this is a mod, and it is still better than Dark messiah of might and magic, you won’t hear any complaints from me.
