The Vortigaunts' Posture

tbh the sound I miss the most is the humming xen teleportation sound.

Fear not, I actually replaced them myself the other night by combining the old teleportation sound with the new one, sounds quite good in game.
Try it out and let me know if it works.

Much better than “Gallah lung!”

glaaaaugh

Did you test me teleprot sounds glawhg?!

HL2 vorts, and tbh most of HL2 sucks, period.
That’s why BM feels wrong at times.

so edgy and cool

^HL1 vorts and HL1 in general, yeah, why not.

Replaced the original ones, with this ones!

Is good?

I was with xalener on that, but I didn’t like the quality of the old teleport sound. I went out of my way to record it inside of Audacity with HL:S active in the backround.

Been using it for a while, if you want something of a nicer quality and doesn’t sound like it’s in a toilet… it’s in stereo. It’s just the old teleportation sound.

@ Fridge If you want higher & lower pitches may I point you to here and “C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\sourcemods\BMS\scripts” is the directory you want, game_sounds_xen.txt is the script you want.
“XenPortal.Sound”
{
“channel” “CHAN_STATIC”
“volume” “1.0”
“soundlevel” “SNDLVL_120dB”
“pitch” “PITCH_NORM”

"rndwave"
{
	"wave" "^BMS_objects/portal/portal_In_01.wav"
	"wave" "^BMS_objects/portal/portal_In_02.wav"
	"wave" "^BMS_objects/portal/portal_In_03.wav"
}

}
is how I set mine up. If you want to mess with the pitch, where it says pitch put in this exactly as it is: “90,110” it’ll give some variety. Like this:
“XenPortal.Sound”
{
“channel” “CHAN_STATIC”
“volume” “1.0”
“soundlevel” “SNDLVL_120dB”
“pitch” “90,110”

"rndwave"
{
	"wave" "^BMS_objects/portal/portal_In_01.wav"
	"wave" "^BMS_objects/portal/portal_In_02.wav"
	"wave" "^BMS_objects/portal/portal_In_03.wav"
}

}
What it’ll do is tell the engine to assign a random value between 90 and 110 and change the pitch like that.

Cheers, I’ll give it a try

Not to go off-topid, but how does recording it in-game make it higher quality than taking it from the files? If anything, wouldn’t it be less? Forgive me if it’s a dumb question, I don’t understand all this sound engineering stuff, I can only combine sounds and change bass / treble / pitch / speed / volume.

Nice, but changed the script with those line above

With all due respect, I can’t imagine any imitation of a vortigaunt would be an improvement over the original HL1 vortigaunt sounds. Perhaps brush it up a bit, but nothing fancy. The HL1 sounds are good enough already.

Change the sounds and indeed the idle stance and additionally the texture and I’d be more than happy with the vortigaunts.

Similarly I’d hope to see the houndeye’s sounds being replaced by the originals as well.

It’s really these sounds that made Half-Life for me and as of now I they are kind of a let-down in Black Mesa (and HL2 for that matter).

Honestly, I don’t know, but if you play the sound directly from the file, you’ll hear a distinct difference than the one in-game. The sound engine source uses clears it up some how. I’m not a sound engineer either.

It’s the same case with the headcrab sounds the files they use are a lower quality than what you hear in-game.

Edit: Also if you’re curious about how I recorded it with out using a microphone, just right-click on your speaker on Windows 7 and click on “recording devices” after that, right-click on the backround and click “show disabled devices” then enable Stereo Mix. I’m sure you can figure out how to make audacity record from there. Tip: You can bootleg music from youtube this way. :slight_smile:

I’ve copied the original sound files and edited a script to make vortigaunts’ zaps sound exactly like they did in HLS.

Now we have to wait for the textures…

Could you upload it? I’m very much interested. In fact I stopped playing BM because I really missed the good old vortigaunt “vibe” from HL1. I intend to replay it from the moment the vortigaunts enter the fray.

Halferuga…
That’s fucking beautiful. So much for xalener ‘that shit’s too lo-fi’ whines.

Looks like we’ll end up using HL1 for anything but scis and secs.

Wow. Those are great, mind posting them up?

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
