Dethklok!?

That’ll do quite nicely. I’ll get to it after I do some Stairway to Heaven. Or something to that effect.

I like loads of music from all different genres. I have to say that I like Baroque and Electronic (in general) the most. Though 30s jazz is pretty snazzy on a cold winter’s eve.

I like quite alot of pendulum’s earlier stuff like Bloodsugar and Slam and the like.

damn this metal discussion has went on for pages

I like metal.

I’m not sure which one’s my favorite. Maybe tungsten.

I need tungsten to live. Tungsten…

I know, it’s great isn’t it.

There’s a sludge/doom metal band called Tungsten.

Metal, like electronic music, has too many fucking subgenres.

I think that’s the biggest issue. Whenever someone does something slightly different, it needs to be categorized. The minute it becomes a label, thousands feel the need to fill that label with content. What you end up with is a fuckload of samey bullshit; a bunch of musicians making music to fill a series of parameters instead of making music to make music. Nyegh.

Not sure if should play Portal 2 again, or wait to get a YouTube account with a decent amount of subscribers.

It really does. The main ones, death, black, thrash, power, etc are typically easy to categorize though. It’s getting into viking and pirate metal and stuff where things start to break down. I mean I think you should have names for subgenres that sound significantly different. I feel like someone starting to listen to metal feels like I do trying to listen to electronic music. I can’t tell the difference between trance, house, breaks, etc.

I agree.

This is one of the reasons I love Trentemoller so goddamned much. His genre is “Trentemoller”; he records his own samples and makes with it whatever the fuck he wants.

there are many bands that don’t just talk about this topic, Napalm Death is one of them, search their lyrics up
there’s many others such as Death (late in their career), Brutal Truth, Dying Fetus, Terrorizer, Slayer (later in their career), Unseen Terror…

Labels suck, but in a a number of ways, I think they are necessary, obviously that 20+ labels is a stupid thing, maybe something more simple as this is ‘‘heavy metal’’, this is ‘‘brutal heavy metal’’ or something like that

I think his point was that there wouldn’t be a need to label and categorize the stuff if new bands weren’t copycats of other bands/ trying to sound like one of these categories.

Imagine that humans had a natural instinct not to form a band if they weren’t creative.

At first there’d be fewer bands, but eventually you’d just have a diverse selection of musicians/groups that you could only identify by name.

Then, to categorize them, the musicians themselves are each given a chart of 100 or so mood-based adjectives to tick off, and then when everyone fills out their charts they get circulated to the public.

So the guy who likes Angry music might browse the Violent section, or maybe branch out and pick something from Tasteful or Romantic

Then you’d get distributors who throw in some seasonal categories or scenarios with criteria such as Driving, or Christmas.

Because people have a drive to hate and be better than eachother there would start to be categories based on what nation it originates from and after a while there would be too many terms per artist and the whole system would evolve to what it is now

in the near future a computer will analyse every piece of music yet recorded and algorithmically derive the best song possible and after that everything else will sound like shit and all instruments and fruity loops cds and whatever will just be thrown into the garbage or the street or maybe dumped into the sea to make an artificial reef

And this will be that song.

you certainly have a very nice view of the future, Idi

it’s a nice place to visit but i wouldn’t wanna live there

Hmm probably. I guess I don’t know enough about it or it’s the only thing that strike me.

I haven’t searched for their lyrics, but that’s kind of my point, actually… I mean, Dying Fetus ? Napalm Death ? Not listed here but Cannibal Corpse ? Don’t you find that a little bit gory ? Whenever I look at, let’s say TGP’s playlist (but I don’t mean to target you specifically, it’s just that it had struck me the most) in the WAYLT thread I see something about blood/death or miscellaneous violence and it had me wondered.

+1 for Trentemoller. That guy’s a genius. That’s also why I love Gorillaz, Telepomusik, Bran Van 3000, LCD Soundsystem and others like them. They’re aren’t or weren’t producing a specific genre. They were making music, however the hell they wanted.

Wow.

This forum takes its metal very seriously.

I feel similarly about band names for other genres. L’il B? DJ/MC whoever? Flo Rida? Metal has an image like any other genre that bands adhere to sometimes and others that don’t. Some of them are kind of annoying, like Dying Fetus, and I would probably have some issue telling someone irl if I listened to a band called Dying Fetus. It doesn’t really bother me to listen to a band with names like that though especially if I like the music.
