The Rage Topic

Ah. I was not aware. Hope you manage to fix everything Geek.

SEA-ME-WE 3 Perth<->Singapore cable is down again… 2 days after the last break was fixed

EDIT:

Also having problems with my internet connection, getting drop-outs every 2-3 minutes unless I set the modem to use ADSL1 modulation. The drop-outs seem to have triggered DLM (guessing based on SNR margin), which is causing even slower speeds when the connection is working properly…

In the three months we’ve been together the longest time I’ve gone without seeing my girlfriend is like 10 hours. (And probably like a week total in five months before that.)

Now she’s going away for nine days.

This is gonna suck.

Yes, total relationship noob. Deal with it.

I’ve been working my ass off so hard at my university that I can barely handle it. My weekdays are a hell of stress and work. I’m free on the weekends but I’m so burnt out I don’t have the energy to do anything so I just sit there doing nothing and feeling depressed.

I spent over 10 hours absolutely perfecting my resume and applied to Google, Apple, M$ and Yahoo. It’s been a few weeks now and I haven’t heard back from one of them. I get it, they’re hard companies to get jobs at and I didn’t expect to land the jobs, I just expected to get at least one interview. And sure I should probably lower my standards, but why the fuck did I go to an expensive prestigious university (UC Berkeley), bust my ass for a 3.79 and a double major (Computer Science and Economics) and resume building extracurriculars, just to lower my standards when it comes time to graduate and get a job?

Really I think I just need to do networking, but I loathe networking. Pretty desperate here, talking to a friend of a friend who I don’t know at all but who works at google seeing if she can mention me to the recruiter. I feel like an ass begging a stranger to help me get a job. And how great would that be if begging someone to mention me to a recruiter is what gets me an interview, not my credentials which I’ve worked so hard to develop?

Yup. Welcome to the world. I got my current job because a guy I studied with works there. He got it because one of his former coworkers works there.

You have to network, but it helps to not approach it as networking. I’m a Python developer, so I found a really cool local Python interest group, and I attend it every month. We go and drink beer, listen to awesome speakers (including Python core contributors), and geek out about Python and about tech in general. None of us is ever there begging anyone else for a job, but the folks who are looking and folks who are hiring are extremely open about it (and local companies looking for Python developers are always scrambling to host and sponsor the meetups), and connections get made.

Thanks for the advice, and I’m sure you’re right. My uncle became a millionaire because he got hired at Intel in the early days because they guy who was supposed to interview him was sick and the guy who stood in just happened to be his old neighbor.

I kind of fucked up in college because I did a lot of 3D printing related stuff and now run a 3D printing club instead of doing computer science related stuff. I did it because that’s what I had fun doing, but now I’ve built this big huge network in the industry that isn’t the one I want to work in (I see 3D printing as just a hobby not a career). I do know some CS guys and that’s how I’ve found this friend of a friend.

In the past two months, I have woken up…
at 5am about 21 days
at 5:30 about 21 days
at 6:15 about 16 days

and been allowed to sleep in on four mornings. I was woken up around 8am on 2 of those mornings after staying up late, hoping to be able to sleep in.

I was told I could go home yesterday around 14:00, to maybe actually get a Saturday, but then I was tasked until 23:00, which was still a miracle in that I wouldn’t be woken up at 5am the following day (as is the norm). This morning, I receive a phone call at 5:45 demanding I come back into work to speak with the person who was calling me, so then he could tell me to empty a trashcan. I sped over, did what he said, and got the go-ahead to be free. I went home and hopped in bed. Ten minutes after getting into bed, I get another phone call demanding that I go wake up a shitbag who is late for duty and not answering his phone. He lives a six-minute walk away.

I give up on trying to fall back asleep.

@garrthbarrttinn As it turns out I’m in the same boat. Best I can say is like Geek said, it’s best to network. Even if you’ve got a shiny resume and an excellent coverletter, there’s no guarantee that you’ll get the job. It was pure chance that the Recruiter from Bethesda Software contacted me when I applied for that programmer job (I didn’t make the cut).

You need to be persistent, if you don’t know anyone who works there, the next best option is to get in touch with the recruiter(s) and then talk to them. It’ll show them that you want the job and it ups the chances of them actually looking at your resume.

@Tiki Sucks to be you.

Yeah, be glad you’re not on the same boat as me.

Aye, that’s true, I have my own shit to rage about, but it’s common and I already ranted about it somewhere else. :stuck_out_tongue:

Welp, I guess this is more happy than rage, but I figured I’d post a follow up.

The friend of a friend I asked to drop a good word for me went ahead and did it, and within an hour I got an e-mail offering me a phone interview! Half excited half annoyed that the difference between not having a connection and having a connection is 3+ weeks vs. 1 hour. Welcome to the real world I guess?

I’m going to have to somehow find people to do the same for me for the other places I applied to.

Sooo I got stranded on the highway tonight. On my way home no less. On the the center divider shoulder. At night. I suspect the fuel rail in my car’s shot.

Words. Cannot. Describe. How. Fucking. Annoyed. I. Am. Right. Now.

Edit: My car’s dead. This just keeps getting better and better.

All attempts at sleep have been unsuccessful. There is a raiding party of dungeons and dragons players crashed here for the night (courtesy of my sister) and every time I doze off I get awoken by snorting or other such noises. I put a pillow over my head and then got treated to the sound of my bean bag chair being defiled by raucous flatulence and after that died down my neighbour’s friend with anxiety decided this would be the time to start up her marathon of pacing that she sometimes feels the need to do through all hours of the night. It’s march of the socially awkward penguins and it’s 3 in the bloody morning

EDIT: The farting has started up again. fml

The water in my neighbourhood is contaminated with some bacterial whatever, and is undrinkable without boiling it first.
Thankfully >90% of my consumption of liquids is in the form of tea, so boiling water isn’t really new to me, but it can be pretty easy to forget depending on the circumstance, the other day I just brushed my teeth in the unpurified water and had diarrhoea the entire next day, so I dread what will happen next time I stagger in drunk and want to stick my head under the tap.

Whenever I see someone complaining about Black Mesa costing $20, it’s annoying.

When they attempt to point out all the minute flaws in the game to attempt to justify them not wanting to pay $20, it’s irritating.

When you learn that this same person has absolutely no problem spending hundreds of dollars on other games, it’s almost maddening.

And it’s even worse when those same people have no problem spending hundreds of dollars for virtual game items (a few examples come readily to mind).

Ah, music.

I wasn’t sure if I’d hear it again, given that fucking Windows installed an update and nuked my audio driver again.

I’m really hating the French flag profile pictures on Facebook. It’s just their picture, or people with their friends, or, my favorite, people’s vacation pictures in front of the Eiffel Tower. “ME ME ME ME ME france ME ME ME ME ME.”

Fuck red team, never going red team again.

Ever since around the Win10 launch I’ve had this really really bad glitch with my graphics drivers that causes severe flickering once every 30 minutes or so and I have to reset my display adapter to fix it. It’s been like this for months and I finally found a thread online full of people with the same problem. Turns out it’s a driver issue that only affects people with 290s/390s and dual 1440+ monitors.

There’s been like 4 driver updates since the problem started and AMD still hasn’t fixed it.

Anyone know how to write a .bat script that restarts the display adapter?

I’m sick again. Can’t use any of my throat muscles without feeling pain, super lethargic, and my head is in a fog.

Oh, and this is the week where most things are due for school. Woo.

Amazon delivered my GTX 980 Ti today. To the leasing office of my apartment complex. The office managers decided to fuck off early for the Thanksgiving weekend - on four hours of notice (notification of 1PM close time came at 10AM TODAY).

My new graphics card - which I paid for two-day shipping on to have for the four-day weekend - is now locked in the leasing office until Friday, when a tech is going to come by and leave it outside the office for me.

It’s. THANKS. GIVING. It happens at the SAME SHIT-SMOTHERING TIME EVERY CHRISTFUCKING YEAR. THERE IS NO REASON YOU CAN’T GIVE OUT YOUR HOLIDAY OFFICE SCHEDULE AT LEAST A WEEK IN ADVANCE SO I DON’T DROP $30 ON TWO-DAY SHIPPING.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
