So, I’ve been playing basically nothing but Risk of Rain for the last two months or so, because I love the hell out of this game. But it has an annoying bug, where it starts up with an error (“Error defining an external function”) and then has no sound. It’s a problem that a lot of people have.

I’ve gotten to the point where I can only start the game maybe one in five times without getting the error.

The official fix (which tells you to reinstall the Visual C++ redistributable) is a complete farce; it doesn’t work for everyone (or even for a majority of players), and when it does work, it doesn’t work permanently. The game is made by two guys, and neither of them knows what the hell the error is. Neither does anyone else. Tons of players are getting this error. The only solution seems to be to restart Steam and/or reboot your PC until the game starts without it, which happens seemingly at random.

These two dudes need to get their shit together and either fix this bug or bring in another guy to handle their shit. As much as I love the game, I’m gettin’ real fuckin’ tired of spending twenty minutes randomly restarting it before I get an instance that has sound.

EDIT: Fuck me, even reinstalling the goddamn game didn’t fix it.

@Geek Without looking at the internal code, I couldn’t say.

Is there anything particular after you fire up the game that it triggers the bug? It may help narrow down the list of culprits.
