The Placebo Effect

Pretty interesting video I just wanted to link, and now that I think about it, it’s pretty true. I remember when my parents gave me grape juice when I was young and told me it was wine, I started acting weird and thought I was drunk. Anyone else have any experiences like that?

I wonder if I get shot in the femoral artery, and I’ve been taking pills that supposedly make me somehow bullet resistant and less likely to bleed out, if I would live.

No placebo effects on me… at least that I’m aware of.
But it definitely works on some kinds of people…

Guess I don’t have to worry about cancer then.

It’s called hope also.

The Placebo Effect in demonstration.

Kinda the entire point of the placebo effect there. If you know its happening, it isn’t.

Wait, so those buttons don’t do anything? So then how the hell do I get all those elevators screwed up?

placebo effect: the power of ignorance

Jedi mind tricks on work on the most weakest of minds.

Move along.

Is that extra ‘on’ some sort of subliminal programming?

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment

Neat.

Nocebo’s are also pretty interesting. It’s essentially the opposite of a Placebo: A curse if you will.

For those that like to read:

It’s interesting how the human mind is geared towards the idea of self-fulfilling prophecy. I wonder how many people on here have had Nocebo effects on here?

DoW2 =)

@Cat, sometimes I wonder how things like that work out, it seems like whether or not the Nocebo or Placebo effect take place is completely random, because you can go into something expecting it to be terrible and enjoy it, or make the experience bad for yourself.

It states in the article that it is usually people who suffer from anxiety andpr high stress are most vulnerable to Nocebo’s due to both the mindset of that person, and also due to a different balance of chemicals within said individual.

I’m no scientist, but I can totally see how someone who is anxious would suffer from said effects more so than someone who is more at ease. Anxious people will tend to let what others say worry them to the point of sickness.

As for Placebo’s, I guess they work for people who are willing to believe in unorthodox medicinal practices. It’s just so strange that if you believe in something so much it can actually effect your body.

I wished that worked with super powers… Goddamn you nature and your lack of Lasereyes.

Let’s try!
There’s a big button in my house which I don’t know what it does.

I Believe when I press it I will get an incredible charisma which will help me get the chick i wanted to date.
“click”

fingers crossed doesnt come into it if yo already believe it will happen

Yeah , you are right. that’s why it didn’t work :’(
