The giant fan on blast pit.

when I first came to the fan, I didn’t know what to do. I couldn’t turn the fan off, so I knew it was vital to the game, but since I kept getting cut in half I thought there was no way to get back up, and ruled it out. since there were a bunch of grenades laying around, I thought I was supposed to throw a grenade up, time it correctly, and destroy the wood. It wasn’t for a few hours i realized i was supposed to scurry back up before it go too fast.

also, why does a fan that large just lead to one tiny duct?

I think it was mentioned before, but directly above the boards is a screen (that you “hit” your head on) presumably leading to an exhaust duct outside or something.

Now, the main question is, why the ventilation system would be connected to it up there is a mystery to me (other than gameplay reason’s). You’d think that the pressure would force airflow INTO the vent instead of sucking it OUT.

EDIT: hmm, even though it constricts near top, maybe in reality the additional pressure created would be negated by the lower pressure of the airflow moving faster past the vent opening causing it suck instead of blow? Not sure, but it sure is fun Impulse 102’ing a bunch of floating gibs up there :smiley:

And maybe they can make the whole thing where once you turn the fan on and you SKYROCKET TO THE TOP OF THE F*CKING CHAMBER LIKE A CHEETAH ON CRACK
can have some more realistic aspects as well. Like you die if you hit the ceiling too fast.

Yeah the whole bashing your face on the ceiling at high speeds but taking no damage as sorta… eeeeeehhh…

Never mind the fact that the vent at the top leads directly to an access corridor.

How should the player manage not to hit the ceiling too fast and survive? I think there should be rather a triggered amount of damage when you are blowed up with high speed.

Or the initial air blast could become less powerful when the player gets near the top, as he gets further away from the fan, making him sort of hover there near the top. Fyzziks!

The air blast wouldn’t become less powerful. It’s a big tube where no wind can escape in any leaks or whatever, all of it gets pushed into the ceiling, so the boost keeps its power, I think.

I repeat: fyzziks! It was just an idea coming from someone who took one semester of high-school physics that offered a solution that was only a little bit more believable than the original. :stuck_out_tongue:

This is how the fan and ventilation works.
To the left is the fan creating an air current to stream by the vent opening.
This creates a suction in the vent, this is very basic pneumatics and is used to grip items by the use of suction or to ventilate gas etc… from an area.

So technically Gordon shouldn’t be able to crawl inside the vent because of the suction :freeman:

I have an idea.

Switch to a gigantic passive cooler solution.

Then the puzzle would be Gordon climbing it Assassin’s Creed style.

No…just no. Those kinds of things always throw me off. it’d just be better to leave the fan in.

It’d be a good place to hide, go under the fan and turn on the switch.

No one would be able to do anything about it or get you, they’d all just fly up into the dodgy wood planks covering the top (in this high security lab)

Hey here’s an idea, it’d make that part more realstic but still keep the game mechanic.

They could have a switch right there overlooking the fan, but maybe like… a zombie or other monster had smashed it. SO that forces the player climb down under the fan itself and press a back-up switch or something to start it.
