so we can state spoilers here? not book spoilers but series spoilers? as in, if it was on 3 nights ago, I can post about it here?
putting it in black is always nice in case someone hasn’t watched yet
Actually, I was just wondering if I was reading too much into things.
I’m wondering, do the TV series seasons correspond to a book each or something?
The first two did. Book Three is divided into two seasons, as will Book IV from what I have heard.
Not quite true. The first season was pretty much word for word A Game of Thrones (the first book). The second season was roughly the same as A Clash of Kings (the second), but there was a lot of edited and added plotting, specifically when it came to Qarth and Arya in Harrenhal. Now, while it is true that season three contained material from half of book three, A Storm of Swords, it also contained material from book five (in the books, Theon pretty much drops off the face of the earth after the whole Winterfell business in book two and doesn’t show up again until the fifth).
This season is accelerating things at light speed. True, it follows the overall plot of the second half of ASoS. However, since many characters have an inequal amount of chapters in the series, and since this is a television series and fans want to see their favorite characters at least once every two weeks, they are advancing the plot dramatically for a few key characters. Dany, Bran, and Theon come to mind. Hell, Bran’s storyline for ASoS was completed in season 3 and none of the three mentioned are even present in book four.
So not only are we going to see the second half of book three…we’ll also be seeing plenty of material from book five, probably a little bit of book four, A Feast for Crows, and a bunch of fabricated plots to tie it all together.
Next season…I have no clue what they’re going to do. The series doing everything way quicker and out of order is a big reason why GRRM has got to hurry the fuck up with his writing. After this season, we will have breached the event horizon for a few characters, meaning any further material for them hasn’t been covered in the novels even though the next season should technically only be tackling the fourth of the five released novels.
EDIT: Scary thought - GRRM has told HBO the overall plot of ASOIAF. They know the entire series, from where it left off at the end of A Dance with Dragons to the last chapter of A Dream of Spring. If push comes to shove…I wouldn’t put it past the HBO execs to just carry on with the plotlines they know for each character. Ironically and horrifically, this will mean that the television adaption will spoil everything for the dedicated readers.
It’s possible GRRM will simply tell the makers of the show what he plans to do in the next books.
He has, as stated in my post.
HBO has made GRRM put into notary safe-keeping a 50-page treatment of the big finale, towards which the whole story is going; should he die or be otherwise unable to deliver content for the show on time, they are allowed to open that sealed envelope and develop the scripts according to that.
Or maybe I’m just messing with you.
Great episode, but:
The scene at Craster’s keep lasted too long, and
the Uber-White Walker looked a little too cartoonish for my taste.
That was so creepy. And people call me a creep
I bet people called you creepy during your white walker phase.
I bet Tommen got his first boner when Margaery Tyrell visited him at night.
I bet he didn’t actually get back to trying to sleep after she left.
Damn kids and their urges.
All I have to say is that the book is awesome so far. I should’ve started reading this years ago.
Kids? I’m 22 and I know i would have reacted differently.
fo sho
You kids and your urges.
I don’t have urges. And stop calling me Shirley.
