short of completely transitioning to internal HDD/flash, console manufacturers will have no choice but to continue using DRM protected media with the compact disc form factor, because people want it to be as easy as buy disc, shove disc in console, play… which is what consoles were meant for from the beginning
Until internet becomes fast enough (and with a high enough data limit) to allow super-fast downloading and almost instantaneous play and come with a HDD big enough to store every single game you own, then it wont happen.
Oh the internet will become faster, but it will always be expensive.
Well, you could do what I believe the DSi does, and just have games on SD cards. Someone’s already suggested that. As flash memory gets bigger and bigger, it’ll be easier to put games on it until you can eventually put RAGE onto one uncompressed. In time, it may be a viable replacement for the Blu-Ray/DVD, but as of now, it’s not very practical.
