Textures inside Hammer Editor won't load.

So something weird happens with my Hammer Editor.
Some textures won’t render inside the 3D view when i’m making maps. In-game they all render normally.
It’s quite weird and sometimes annoying, because I can’t see like if the texture is aligned correctly, if there is something wrong with it, etc.

First and second screenshots:
The selected brushes are supposed to be Nodraw on the outside (they are with nodraw) but do not render.

Third screenshot:
The selected brushes are using the Skybox texture (tools/toolsskybox) but again, do not render.

Fourth screenshot:
These are supposed to be unbreakable glass (this seems to happen with every glass texture)

Last screenshot:
These use a wood plank texture:

Note: They DO render normally in-game.

PS: How can I add custom textures in the game? I’ve tried to add one for the target on the range but they always appear as missing textures. I’ve followed many tutorials but they seem not to work every time I try.

How to add custom textures:

Use VTFEdit, import the texture of your choice, save it as .vtf, in a folder you want your textures to be in the blackmesa materials folder.
Simple, put them in a folder called polardog at your desktop.
in VTFEdit go to Tools -> Generate .vmt

Copy the polardog folder into your bms materials folder.
If you open the .vmt in Notepad++ you can see the path it has set for the texture.

Reopen hammer editor to get the new textures.
Repopen black mesa to get it to use the new textures.

Hammer says this:

Loading C:\Users\halflife1bv\Desktop\hammerstuff\BMS_Stuff\bms_shootingrange.vmf
*** Encountered VTF file with an invalid minor version!
*** Encountered VTF file with an invalid full header!
Error reading material “materials/shooting_range/target.vtf”

Error reading material “materials/shooting_range/target.vtf”

I did everything you said.

Also, i want to know why some default textures stay invisible inside hammer. It’s kinda annoying

unselect raduis culling its the R in a red cicle and also when you make the .vtf make sure its version 7.4 and either DTX1 or DTX5 image format

Your Hammer is probably loading below DX9/Shader Model 2.0, which we stripped out support for in the last update, for optimisation.

In your graphics card control panel, ensure that Hammer is set to use your graphics card, and not integrated graphics. This will resolve the issue for sure.

The problem is: I currently use a Laptop, so I do not think it HAS a graphics card. (It’s pretty damn old)
I do know it uses an integrated graphics setting, but again, I’m not aware if it has a graphics card, neither where to find the config panel

Was going to make a new thread but seen as this one is the issue I’m having, I’ll post here instead.

All brushes that have Nodraw applied to a face cease to render at all in hammer.

I’ve had this issue since your CSM update and I’ll list off the thing’s I’ve done to try and sort out this issue I’m having

 • Tried pointing my GTX 960 to hammer (was done already as onboard is disabled to avoid it taking control, re-enabled it to double confirm)
 • Checked game files - 100% fine
 • Checked hammer files - 100% fine
 • Removed & unsubbed to workshop mods
 • Uninstalled Black Mesa & cloud saves
 • Tried other versions of hammer on duplicated Black Mesa maps (to isolate them and not assign changes from other versions) with Black Mesa configs - still same issue.
 • Beat head against keyboard, still no dice and a broken AltGr key

Happy to hear what you think about this because I don’t really know what else I can do now, much love <3

on the right hand side in your visgroup window make sure everything has a tick in its box, unticked boxes don’t get displayed or rendered

Already tried that, was a negative.

This thread? https://steamcommunity.com/app/362890/discussions/0/358415206083783716/#c358415206088401708

Not at my PC now as I’m packing for my hospital stay but will test this out asap, thanks for this.

If this does work, then hammer is still looking for the lower end shaders for its render modes, why will it affect 1 mode and not another and can it be fixed, that is the question (but 1 that doesn’t need addressing asap)

Switching from textured shaded to textured in the 3d view should resolve this issue - it does for 95% of cases.

Texture-shaded is only really even kind of useful during the nodraw stage. It just breaks stuff, otherwise. Once your map’s getting some textures and details that should be more than enough to tell faces apart.

Well the issue is, any brush that has at least 1 face textured with nodraw then causes the entire brush to not render, this appears to be the case for all tool textures after doing a little bit of digging.

Could I request the devs to perhaps in the future when possible to update all tool textures so that they don’t rely on old engine shizz that’s been removed?

I can dig some more to provide more information if it would be helpful but I won’t be awake until Tuesday as I’ll be under most of Monday.
