Tentacle jumping and other related bugs

youtube.com/watch?v=kpNCPoXI0jM

  1. Tentacles respond slowly to gunshots but it takes only few steps to call them to you really quickly (start of the vid)
  2. Jumping m8 be ok but that unfinished textures not (top of rocket engine)
  3. If tentacles are on top floor you can see how they are levitating in the air

That super jump is a great find! I can’t wait to try that myself. I think in the original Half-Life doing that just made you slip off like it was a slope or get stuck in mid-air.

2: As for the “unfinished texture”, well, I think it should stay black. It is supposed to be dark way up there and if the flashlight was able to illuminate the ceiling then it would undermine the feeling that it stretches farther than it really can. You aren’t meant to be up there. You can see through the top of that rocket exhaust thing because it has been optimized so the computer doesn’t have to render things the player can’t see.

1: Black Mesa has a sort of problem with teaching players that they can be silent. Since this mechanic was completely absent in Half-Life 2, having them react to gunshots (and thus cuing in the player that grenades probably attract attention too) is pretty important to informing the player that those things can’t exactly see.

When I said “unfinished texture” I meant top side of the rocket engine. I’m ok with that black thing up there as you said “you aren’t meant to be up there”
And right, tentacle cant see it can only hear so firing 10 rounds from MP5 should attract its attention pretty damn quicker than 3 footsteps

I believe the invisible “unfinished texture” you’re referring to is an intended rendering optimization.

Generally, game developers don’t want to render any sides of a model that players aren’t normally supposed to see. In this case, that “side” is the top of that rocket engine.

Edit: What Taceo said.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
