System Shock 2: Source?

Hello, my name is LucasGodzilla and I wonder if anyone has any experience with Black Mesa mods. I have an interesting idea of making a mod that remake the horror sci-fi game System Shock 2. If anyone have modding experience, please friend me on steam. My username is the same.

Will you be the ideas guy?

Well that and I can help design it. It’s hard to explain but I help in numerous ways (including making trailers), are you interested?

Should do it in Cryengine instead.

Nah, I don’t know the first thing about making games but I was curious about your actual development skills. What can you do exactly?

To be honest, I’m not EXACTLY sure what I can do, however I definitely know I can do the things I’ve already listed up, so…

How can you not be exactly sure what you can do? So you just had the idea and decided to make a thread here without actually thinking it through?

That does not bode well for the future of your project.

Funnily enough tho, I had the exact same idea as you some time ago but since my game development skills are nill, it just remained an idea in my head.

I think you’d get your ass sued unless you can get whoever owns the rights to the game to let you do a remake like the BM team did with Valve. And you would most likely want the full Source engine which costs money.

On that note, get someone to invest on your team and build it on a Unreal Engine 4 license, which is actually affordable.

And Kairo is right. Best bet would be to make a spiritual sequel or something on the same vein as SS2 but not directly related to it.

I want to make a MOD not a GAME.

I’m pretty sure mods are still subject to getting shut down.

Yep, they are.

IIRC there was a pretty good Mechwarrior game that got shut down that way.

Anything’s subject to getting shut down if it uses IP without permission.

Get some legitimate development skills first. Learn to do something. No one wants to work for/with the guy who doesn’t know his own skill past “I can design.” Design what? Architecture? Puzzles? Sound? etc, etc.

Well is anyone gonna help at all? I thought this is the helping hand section not the b*tching section!

We’re trying to help you by telling you to actually learn how to do stuff before trying to recruit people and also learn that trying to make a remake to a game almost never works because 9 times out of 10 you’ll get shut down by the people who own the license.

We’re giving you actual advice. It seems you don’t even have any concrete game development skills and just want other people to realize your idea for you.

It’s all real info and advice, no need to get upset.

Black Mesa is an interesting remake case. The developers of Half-Life are incredibly open to community work and are letting it pass. But very few other fan remakes survive without a C&D.

…

I’m sorry we didn’t jump on board immediately as you might’ve expected. We have a more realistic view of things and you can’t even seem to cough up any concrete skills besides maybe making trailers? Having ideas is easy but you gotta work your fair share if you want anything to succeed, specially when you’ll be working with people on the internet many miles and countries apart.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
