Steambox: The Steam Universe is Expanding

Gears 3 and Halo 3/reach :c

Nothing parallels the Halo 3 custom games experience. Not even the most extravagant mods on the craziest PC shooter can recreate that unadulterated and instantaneous freedom.

It looks… utilitarian. Miles better than the Xbone, but not anywhere near the PS4.

I don’t understand everyone’s hard on for the ps4. Everything else is a box and ps4 is a box with a slant and suddenly its fucking great looking.

Also the Steam box isn’t annoying piano black its just matte so it wins. I hate piano black.

It has 3 DVI ports and 3 HDMI ports

eh, yeah. That’s exactly why it’s great looking, and it’s not like that skew is a tiny detail that is inconsequential. It’s the shape of the fucking console. The ps4’s shape, even broadest brush stroke, is unique. Just because you can simply break it down in a single adjective doesn’t mean it’s actually really a small physical deviation. I’ve given the oversimplification speech already, don’t make me do it again.

Plus it calls to memory the PS2 slim design, which was also great for its time. It’s like a throwback while being something new at the same time. That’s what every designer strives for and fails consistently. Hell, I’m pretty sure that’s what Microsoft was going for with the Bone Xone. Sony got it.

Also, that box that the console comes in is fucking cool. Is there any word on what “tier” that steambox is, or are they just releasing single types for preview at the moment?

any shape that makes it impossible to stack or otherwise put things on is just annoying
my space is valuable

also, shit, valve really have style
look at that damn crate

Also, I love the simplicity of the console. It doesn’t look like it’s trying to dazzle you with fancy design gimmicks and a shiny finish. It is what it is: a steam box

Those pics of the SteamBox prototype are bringing back some memories of the rather terrible Dell PCs I had to use in the last few years of high school :fffuuu:

I imagine even the prototype SteamBox(es) will be more reliable than those things…

It’s a Mann Co. supply crate!

One out of every hundred crates sent out just contains a hat instead of a steambox.

1 crate may contain the sole hidden copy of HL3 in existence, the lucky one will be allowed to legally upload it on his personal hosting server and charge people any price he desires. Once the game sells enough, Valve will ask the guy for a part of the overall earning, taking 90% fee or sue him otherwise.

I don’t understand how come nobody can read anymore, there are 20 photos in that imgur album, one of them is a picture of the manual that lists the MOBO, CPU, GPU even the damn wireless card is listed. And people are still asking “what’s inside the box”…

Arrives… without the key :stuck_out_tongue:

Yeah I personal don’t like the look of ps4.

I don’t care, I’ll open it with my trusty crowbar. :freeman:

I don’t get why people are worried about AMD card, obviously SteamOS is going to support as wide a range of hardware as possible. It would be kinda self-defeating if it didn’t.

Also, still waiting on formal desktop PC support :frowning:

short sighted impatient nerds

I’m kinda wishing Valve had cut a deal with AMD for Mantle support on SteamOS. Unless AMD is lying about slowly loosening the reigns on Mantle until it’s open like OpenGL/supports Nvidia GPUS, Valve picking up Mantle would make things easier on devs by reducing the number of APIs they’re expected to work with (not bother with OpenGL, just port to Mantle), theoretically (because we haven’t seen any actual benchmarks yet) get even more performance than what low OS overhead alone would offer, and maybe even get BF4 onto SteamOS given that they’ve made a big deal about partnering with AMD and are gonna port to Mantle. Not to mention, it’s hard to break into a heavily established market, as with APIs, so it helps to get as much force backing a single API as possible. With Valve and AMD each supporting separate APIs, it makes it more likely that both will fail (yes, I know, OpenGL isn’t a new API, but, given its lack of use, it certainly has to break into the market).

I’m guessing Valve is trying to be as open as possible and not rely on a shortsightedly competitive manufacturer, so maybe we’ll just have to wait the long time for AMD to let mantle go open source.

Also, to pitch in/resurrect the PS4 design argument, I dislike the slanted style because it doesn’t seem convenient like a straight up box. Really hurts me in the OCD. Also, speaking of hurting OCD, what the hell is with the stupid inset middle groove running around the middle of the PS4 and Ibuypower Steambox? Seems like a really poor aesthetic choice if you ask me. And, at least on the PS4, it just makes it look like it’s harder to access your USB ports.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
