Steam Version permanently stuck in Fullbright mode

As title says. Not just the first background map… the entire game is stuck.

mat_fullbright does not help.

Check you have mat_hdr_level set to 2, and make sure you are running DirectX 9 (adding +mat_dxlevel 90 to the games startup). That will fix fullbright. And also set mat_fullbright 0

DX level was always 9, and mat_fullbright didn’t help.

What did eventually help was setting the HDR level to 2, and then restarting the game, though for some reason it took several restarts to get the changes to stick.

Are none of the maps compiled with LDR lighting?

That is correct, we will have to work on the kinks in forcing HDR to be on always.

Yeah, occasionally the game will bump the HDR level back to 0, and force me to have to set it back to 2. This happens especially when I try to alter video settings, even when the settings are unrelated to HDR level.

If I’m not mistaken, doesn’t mat_fullbright require sv_cheats to be set to 1?
Have you tried the commands with cheats enabled?

This happens to me as well, I changed HDR to FULL instead of expanded.
I can’t disable fullbright either.

If you guys can attach your config.cfg file here (located in \Steam\steamapps\common\Black Mesa\bms\cfg) that will help us with this issue.

My old monitor showed it correctly, but we just got a new monitor last week, it shows like this. I have to turn the settings down in order to get it to view as originally intended. I am sure this is just me tho.

Here’s my config.cfg file as it is right now (I had a final exam earlier today, so this reflects the state of BM immediately after I quit it last time. I haven’t fired it up again yet.)

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/14565853/bms/config.cfg

EDIT: I started BM again and found fullbright mode, even though the settings said that HDR was set to Full. mat_hdr_level was 1, so I set it to 2 and restarted. That fixed the fullbright issue, but as soon as I started a multiplayer game, the fullbright mode got bumped back to 0. I couldn’t change fullbright again without disconnecting, so it looks like fullbright is permanently on when I’m in multiplayer…

Now if only I could get console commands to open. I went into keyboard>advanced and ticked enable console commands, but no key I have on my keyboard seems to open it whatsoever.

Maybe I should try to fix this issue through the game’s folder itself, but it’s proving tricky.

I would be able to get help with this aswell,I’d like to HDR be on Bloom,as when i set it on another option, game uncontrolably lags.

Did you see this?

It’s possible your graphics drivers are defaulting bms.exe to use integrated graphics rather than your graphics card. You will have to look that up in your graphics control panel, and set it to use the graphics card.

Another potential fix is to edit the autoexec.cfg.

Find ‘autoexec’.cfg in SteamApps/common/Black Mesa/bms/cfg and open this file with Notepad

Add the following lines to this file:

mat_dxlevel 95
mat_fullbright 0
mat_hdr_level 2

Save the file and launch the game to see if this fixes your issue.

Emm,i am using an AMD laptop,is there a fix for that one too?

Yeah I solved the issue a few hours back actually. Turns out the problem was exactly the integrated graphics thing. I had to open up my NVIDIA settings to force it to use my graphics card with Black Mesa. After that, my system finally got the idea of what to do.

In fact I did not. Thanks for putting it up!

Uhh,i havent fixed it yet.

Didn’t catch this bug on pc with external (nvidia) card, but got it on a desktop comp with integrated intel graphics.

We have a list of immediate issues to resolve as quickly as we possibly can, including the languages bug, this one, and the crashes. We hope to have that out to you guys as soon as possible.

Just to point out the fullbright thing IS actually an issue across a lot of Source games, which Valve haven’t solved either. But we will do our damn best.

I can’t seem to force black mesa to use my amd card. Damn :
Nvm fixed it. But now it doesn’t let me set shadows to high.
I had the same problem with half-life 2 but I fixed it with these start up commands -force_device_id 0x1180 -dxlevel 98
Black mesa doesn’t seem to fall for it though.

PS: Ah screw it fullbright resets again. I’ll deal with it when I have time I guess.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
