So, Valve's new Free Game contains Source SDK

https://store.steampowered.com/app/630/

I wonder if this means BM will be “free free” as opposed to just “free”

What do you think?

It would seem so.

The more important question is: does the update of the SDK affect the development of BM in any way? Or any other finished mods.

[EDIT]

May not QUITE be the valve-official version of the engine. It sounds a little too good to be true after all Valve has done to ensure the SDK costs money (a fair move) but I’ll see.

It’s just the SDK for Alien Swarm.

It seems another source powered game will still be required for BMS unless there’s some misunderstanding in that thread.

So…this is not Source engine…HL2 engine

Besides, the more important question would be whether or not it ships with the SDK Base and SDK Base 2007.

Could this possibly mean HL2 and its episodes will have depth of field and all that jazz? I hope so.

Anyone notice that there’s an alien in it that exactly resembles a Gonarch but has only three legs? Was that in the Unreal version of the game or has Valve had the aliens redesigned? :jizz:

haha i sed the same thing on another set of forums this morning! i think ur right!

Yeah, when i watched the trailer/teaser/whatever I thought the same thing.

Valve Developer Jonathan: “It’s a separate SDK.”

Just in case you were too lazy to click the link above.

Given the 3rd person FoV I don’t think I’ll like this to much. Ahh whatever I’ll still give it a shot.

Clearly you people have never played Diablo…

Diablo was amazing…Diablo 3 looks alright but I’m not hyped about it for some reason. :frowning:

When I saw the words ‘Valve’ and ‘free’ however, my face ended up like this:

It was originally a UT2004 mod, was it not?

This, basically.

Think of it as HL2 : DM (except awesome,) but the provide you with the tools to make things for the game. This qualifies as an “SDK,” although it is not the SDK for Source; it’s the SDK for Alien Swarm. (game specific developer kit.)

EDIT:

Strike that- Johnathan meant it contains an SDK for Alien Swarm (It comes with it’s own stuff; like a “tile based map development tool”). However, according to the Steam page, it includes the Source SDK as well.

“Includes Source SDK”

EDIT:EDIT: It’s the Source SDK locked into Alien Swarm. You will not be able to run mods like Black Mesa on it. (Unless Black Mesa becomes an Alien-Swarm mod.)

I think its the same as the authoring tools from Left 4 Dead 1 and 2. It just contains the Hammer Editor and some modeling tools and no source code for creating “real” mods.

But we will see soon

the whole Alien Swarm thing is just a gag to cover up a huge TF2 update to accompany the polycount items.

It’ll be pretty easy to figure out. I have an account that only has the free portal giveaway that DOESN’T have the Source SDK included, and as a result can’t play Portal: Prelude or Aperture Deja Vu. It might require modifying the gameinfo.txt file for those mods.
I don’t see how they could possibly create a SDK Base that was alien swarm exclusive, especially if the mod that you’d be trying to run on it uses completely custom code and resources, though in the case of Black Mesa, they said that a few things, like the Barnacles and Headcrabs weren’t custom created, so if those creatures weren’t included in the Alien Swarm Source Base, then Black Mesa probably wouldn’t run properly.

I think that at least those particular models are shared between Source games.

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
