Quick in-game test in Alien Swarm of some of the structures I made using my custom made models, everything else are placeholders.
Once you see that as the exterior to big-city buildings, those thin walls in the second pic look really, really weird and wrong. If you’re going to make it textured like a building you’d find in Boston, make it shaped like one, too.
Eh, what? Anyway like I said it’s just a test environment, with different lighting and detail added you will probably look at it differently.

WIP of a contest submission to promote a candy company. I realized that the proportions are off; hopefully the judges won’t care enough. Just wondering though - how well is it done so far? Criticism? I’m really bad at replicating chrome/metal/reflections.

Remove the wood supporting the stairs on the left. This is 2010 for fuck sake.
While you’re at it change the wood texture to white ceramic, change the walls to full-height glass windows partitioned with steel beams, and add colorful curvy chairs from IKEA.
But seriously it looks nice.

It’s wood. Wood bends, and eventually cracks. It needs support. If you want something to be bolted into the wall and no additional support for it, use steel or stone. And even then, it will eventually break quicker than if you had supported it in the first place.

There are plenty of houses that have such strairs without the side support. They probably use a harder type of wood or drill holes in it and use metal bars which are then connected to the side of the walls.

Not all of them are rendered, besides you should know these stairs actually exist.

Although it is basically the same thing to walk on normal stairs, I would have great difficulties to get up stairs like that.
I would be afraid that the stairs break away when I step on them
When my grandparents moved to a new house 20-odd years ago they had a floating staircase like that leading to the basement where all of their food was stored. It’s still in mint condition, apart from a dull surface due to the traffic it had experienced…
