God dammit.
Fuck.
Consoles…
If I read that correctly its their PC exclusivity that fucked them. The console publishing deal would have been their saving grace.
console players, not consoles
And now I miss it even more. Damn it.
Because that’s 100% the whole reason the deal failed.
Ahh man, this is such a shame!! I’m actually finding it hard to believe, it’s like someone’s died. By the way, that review posted a couple back is smack on target - STALKER was unique in so many ways. It was, without doubt, the most immersive gaming experience I’ve ever had, so much so that I believed I was there. And in spite of its bizarre science-fiction story, the atmosphere and setting made it one of the most beautiful and terrifying games of all time.
I find it so hard to believe because I assumed that this was one of the most successful and profitable products that Ukraine produced, and surely they’d received enough funding to produce more? On a side note, how likely do you think it is that, although the company might have dissolved, the game would be picked up by another? Since the game is so unique and gripping, I’d say the liklihood is pretty damn high. I just hope that all the progress they were making on STALKER 2 doesn’t go to waste.
That’s my hope as well. But I have no idea what studio would put in the work to make the next game as awesome as the first game was without ruining it somehow, as there are a lot of pieces in that puzzle that could be screwed up by the wrong people working on it. I loved Stalker so much, I don’t want to see a half-assed sequel that gets it so wrong that my memories of the first one get tarnished (like Clear Sky almost did). Maybe it’s best to just leave well enough alone? I really don’t know beyond wishing they were still working on it.
Is a long shot, but since the whole development company has been made redundant, there’s a possibility that they could all be hired as a team and the core elements kept intact. We can dream.
Guess i’m the only one that really hated the STALKER games <_<
One last time:
FUCK
So dies a great series.
Mind saying why? I can imagine someone disliking it because it is kind of a slow game but I mean… it’s just SO good, at least to me. I’m not exactly sure why I love this series so much though.
omg lol
oh well
To be honest Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl was unplayable without heavily modding the shit out of it. First off the head bobbing was enough to make me vomit, second, the accuracy of the weapons was retarded, third, the weapon and armor degradation rate was one of the major game killers in it for me. I could go on all day about its cons, but!! when i installed the Stalker Complete Mod it made everything perfect and i really enjoyed the game to the end.
That’s pretty much the whole reason why I liked STALKER so much - it was a rejection of all the western games that make shooting so easy and not fun. I think it was Yahtzee on Zero Punctuation that said the game is almost ridiculous in its realism, but then said that part of its uniqueness was that this is probably the closest any game will get to how a normal human will behave in a situation in real life and that was what made it so good.
You will die, a lot, but it was because the world was so dangerous that every encounter, with anomalies, stray dogs, bloodsuckers, could very easily be your last and made it unbelievably tense. It was that tension that was so enjoyable and forcefully drew you in and what so many other game developers fail to realise.
I still don’t understand the reason for its closure though. So they were unhappy with the progress made on STALKER 2? Well get more people in, don’t shut the whole thing down!
GSC is quite a small company, and making games are a BIG risk. I kinda see their reasoning, but yeah. Fuck.
Installing the Complete Mod is almost a necessity for Shadow of Chernobyl. A ton of bugs are fixed, the weapons are rebalanced and feel much better (also renamed to their real-world names). The graphics and audio are also substantially improved. Incidentally, the mod also makes the game somewhat easier and more realistic by toning down and tweaking the AI. GSC’s enemy AI had issues (which the mod fixes), but it was still waaaayyy too good the way they released it. Also, you can get your equipment repaired, you can continue to play after you beat the main mission, you can change factions, etc, etc. Check it out here. Just scroll down until you see the one for Shadow of Chernobyl. If the setting or the idea interests you but there’s something wrong with the actual gameplay, you should really get this mod. It basically turns the game from an obvious beta into a really polished game. There’s also one for Clear Sky and Pripyat now too.
Just another note, like Corruptz0rz said, the headbob is too much for some people, myself included. There’s an easy fix for it you can google though.
I was using the Complete mod for CoP but changed to AtomosFear (Complete has an older version of AtmosFear in it but I don’t know). I also replaced the dubbed voices.
