Retakes of some of the voice-overs

I personally found nothing wrong with the lines, i’m just pleased how faithful to the source material it all sounded. Keep up the good work guys!

The tentacles did sing and yes it was very freaky. I hope they replicate that sound somehow. However, I hope they do something about the clanking sound from the tentacles hitting their beaks on the steel grates. I found that part particularly annoying in the original.

Well, upon a second relistening of the trailer I must pronounce that I think the current score (of sound effects) for the Tentacles (that the BMS team are using) still sound imposing. Not quite as deep or imbuing as the original, but good nontheless; it doesn’t give me pause.

I personally feel that the clanging sound colored the aura of sound effects the game used with a commanding but jarring feel; it’s grating on the ears but I feel something about it works very well. Then again, I’m of that opinion when it comes to most sounds in Half-Life. And while I think the outcry for the Gargantua in the trailer sounds fine, I rather prefer the original as it sounds less like a hulking Dinosaur of villainy and more an other worldly monolith of vehemence and destruction (a might bit deeper in SFX). None of this is a big deal, though, and mayhap even something I’d hold so as paltry at best in light of how good the trailer is otherwise, and how good this mod is shaping up to be. I think the team has done a superb job keeping accurate to the original work while still adding a lot of facets that are agreeably unique unto themselves. I think it all speaks volumes for itself.

You’ve heard about a second of sound for both of those examples. I don’t think you’re in any shape to judge whether or not the Black Mesa team is doing a good job on them or not yet.

Yeah that’s a hell of a critique considering he’s working from strictly watching the trailer. There’s nothing to say those weren’t placeholder sound effects for the time being, or, as Floyd pointed out, if they would sound much better when one is actually playing the game (I’m partial to the latter).

Either way, if you find yourself unimpressed with the sound effects after the final release, you could make your own, or wait for the inevitable “Black Mesa with Half-Life sound effects mod”.

Whatever, the new “Barney” voice is amazing to me, i don’t see why the voice should change.

I’m not saying any of it is deplorable. I wholeheartedly think it’s fantastic, especially for a mod. So long a time as it has been worked on, the fruits of the team’s efforts are definitively being seen. And I do acknowledge that there is room for improvement. There always is. If I had to scrutinize, the above things would be my input. But none of it is anything less than good in my eyes. I’m not having at attacking anyone or doing any harm upon anything. I’m just happy my favorite game of all time is being remade with the potential that I know it has to be many times more invigorating.

Couldn’t agree more. Awesome sounds. Great work guys!

Has the team looked at the lip sync issue for barney in the trailer? that was done to death before the forum crash, but can’t really remember the outcome

btw the only nostalgic sound for me is the deep guttural ‘access denied’ voice from HL1. If they can pin that down, I’m sold 100%

What lip sync issue? I see no lip sync issue.

There were a couple of things in the video that was not “perfect” and the team knew it. But we thought you deserved a look see anyway.

Even Megan Fox gets zits once in a while ya know. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m gonna pretend that’s not true :stuck_out_tongue:

As far as the voice over, I’m not one to worry if the syncing is off a little bit. Sometimes when there’s dialogue in a game my mind starts to wander and I don’t pay attention. So if it’s off a little bit I don’t think it’s that big of deal.

Lies! Horrible, slanderous lies!

I always liked the blunt, inhuman sound the tentacles had (if were talking about the blast pit ones that is, if not i have just made a retardedly stupid comment (as opposed to a smartly stupid one that is (i love brackets, they have a pretty nose))).

Very well said.

Bear in mind that the same reasoning that applies to the trailer’s mp5 sound - namely, that the pounding drum-n-base music covers up some of the deeper portions of the sound - logically applies to the rest of the sound effects in the trailer as well.

Tbh in the original game I melded the m4 and mp5 sound files together with the m4 sound lowered a bit to give it more of a punch.

SPY SAPPIN’ MAH INK! :fffuuu:

I think barney sounds hot, I’ll be standing at the main reception desk of Anomolous Materials all day!

Disclaimer: First of all, I want to say that the new voices are fantastic, and I am by no means suggesting that someone be replaced. I also realize that some of the lines in the trailer may not be intended for the final game.

On that cheery note, I have a small, nitpicky issue with one of the lines. In the trailer (again, I know this might not be in the final game) one of the physicists monitoring the test chamber says something along the lines of “It’s not… it’s not shutting down! Oh no!” The line in the original game stuck with me more: “It’s not… it’s not shutting down! It’s… it’s not… big explosion.”

I know it’s small, but it helped me to connect with the character and the situation. In the original game, I think it shows more shock than fear. This is kind of related to the first post. The scientists “have complete confidence” in Gordon, the experiment, and their calculations. That’s why when the experiment fails, the scientist basically goes into shock. Throughout the first part of the game, there is a general feeling of shock and regret as you dive into the unknown that in my opinion is much scarier and more powerful than total panic (once again I realize that all of these assumptions have been made based on a short trailer will little dialog that might change for the final release). In addition, I think it sets the mood that the first death in the original game is one you hear, rather than one you see, but I completely understand if that was changed in the final game, and if you don’t have time or don’t want to change it back.

The main thing is, the day of the Black Mesa Incident started out like any other. Nobody anticipated the resonance cascade or the damage it caused, so the player discovers it during the course of the game. As long as you keep this feeling in, and I’m sure you will, I will download this on day one. I know that this individual line is probably insignificant, but if there was a particular reason for changing that individual line, I’d love to hear it. In the mean time, this is where I get off.

lol gman ftw

I actually liked that line. It di take out some of the “I can still fix this” from his voice, but it added a more realistic panic and a horrific feeling that the original was lacking.
