Radio chatter :(

Why did you do that, change the radio chatter for Christian Bale’s Batman voice!?

Or is it something they will add later?

I am a very disappointed panda :frowning:

Good god I know, it sounds like Gears of War on Steroids. I’m planning on making my own voice pack for the marines for anyone who thinks the same way.

I recall the FAQ in the post about the leaked gameplay footage said the voices were cheesy and over-the-top on purpose, partly for humor.

lol they are pretty poor, ive even noticed that when you take down snipers in surface tension they say " oh he got me" i mean comon why say that after you die it seems like its humor

haha i thought the same thing, buts its a little thing I can get over and kinda funny

Let John St. John make the voices again? If you don’t know who it is, its the one who voice act for Duke Nukem. And he is the original voice actor for the Half-Life Marines tho (if I’m right).

I dunno, I actually somewhat prefer the new voices.

The robotic “SIR. I. HEAR. SOMETHING.” from the original kinda killed believability when I played.

I actually don’t mind the new voices either. Sometimes they are a bit bad (without being funny) but sometimes they make me chuckle, and sometimes they actually sound cool, like when the HECU yells “WE’RE GONNA KICK-YOUR-ASS!”

I really like the DOO IIIT

It’s funny when they repeatedly say “DOOO IIIT” like 5 times in a row for absolutely no reason. It sounds almost seductive, HA. :3

They’re clearly talking to invisible female scientists.

“Humour” is probably by far the biggest problem I have with Black Mesa.

That aside, I don’t actually mind the marines. They sound a lot younger, which does kind of make sense for soldiers (the old ones sounded like they were in their 40s), plus that one voice actor who keeps showing up and sounding psychotic does sort of make a lot of the plot points make more sense. For instance, the “I killed 12 of those dumbass scientists and not one of them fought back! This sucks!!!” You can tell the guy joined the force because he wanted to kill people and get in shootouts, so it makes sense he wouldn’t think twice about gunning down civilians.

The overacting helps in places, but it hurts in places when it changes the context of what they say. For instance, the original line from On a Rail where two marines are wondering if Freeman caused all this says “Yeah, maybe. All I know is he’s been killing my buddies!” The original acts like he couldn’t give a toss who Freeman is, but he killed Marines and you don’t do that. The Black Mesa Marine in the same situation is like “Yeah… Maybe!” like he only just now put it together and it’s a big revelation. Neither is right or wrong, but this is where overacting hurts more than it helps because this scene really worked better with a flat tone.

What I miss the most, though, is the “radio” part of radio chatter. What we hear in Black Mesa are Marines mumbling from under a gas mask, but we’re hearing them directly. What we used to hear in Half-Life is their conversations over cheap push-to-talk radios with the accompanying static marking button presse and release and the voice modulation from low audio quality. I don’t know, I’ve always been a fan of ye olde radio. It’s what made the intro to the original StarCraft feel much more like sci-fi than the rest of the game.

I don’t mind what’s there. It has its high points and its low points, but Black Mesa’s Marine chatter does the job and has its own moments of greatness.

Can someone please explain the “DOO IIT” to me? It just sounds weird and out of place to me, but maybe if someone can explain it… It seems to play completely randomly, while they idle and during battle.

By the way, I wouldn’t mind a “mod” that would replace the soldiers’ voices with something that sounds more like a stereotypical soldier and cooler. I just don’t like how they acted it. Some of the soldiers sound gay to me, even. Especially the way they say “sir”.

I was mostly okay with the marine voices at first, then I heard that iconic (for me, I hear it pretty much EVERY TIME I encounter marines) “GO! RECON!” and was 100% okay with them.

Actually compiled my own soundfiles from old HECU bits to mimic what we got now in BM. Half way through atm. My next playthrough will sound much different. Thank god for Audacity.

Yet it was cool as fuck and made them sound sinister and alien.

Please post it here for us once you are done!

Lone HECU soldier: “I’M GONNA KICK-YOUR-ASS!”
One-shots him with a shotgun blast to the face.

I swear that happened to me three time in my play through. Gave me quite a chuckle.

It’s copyrighted, derp. You figure the rest.
And sounds are also explicitly not allowed

But seriously, it is easier to do it yourself.
Download HL: Source/ Get hgrunt sounds (don’t even need to extract)/Get audacity/ Start building your own phrases.

I always assumed it was just a baiting tactic, in that they are trying to taunt you into doing something stupid so they can take you out when you make an irrational move (walking into the open, charging at a squad, etc).

Obviously it doesn’t actually work like that, but I think that’s the logic behind the dialogue.

I really liked the “I killed 12 dumbass scientists and not one of 'em fought back. This sucks.”

The way he said, “…this SUCKS!!” like a petulant child. Made me crack a smile.
