3gb of Ram isn’t really necessary. What you need is to get 2gb, any more is just extra IMO because that is fine for a normal gamer.
What you need however is to update your motherboard. Getting loads of Ram won’t make that much difference to the speed of the system beyond a certain point, but a new motherboard will get your computer working faster. You would be suprised by the difference a new motherboard can make.
nah, W7/Vista alone needs 1GB and for example TF2 needs 2GB and more.
1GB + 2GB = 3GB
( my W7 needs 1700MB RAM and if I play TF2, ~3200MB is used )

Yeah but your ram is slower because you need to run them in pairs, that’s how dual channel works.
eh? afaik Dual-Channel is faster than one single RAM.
Modern games definataly hit 2 gig+ especially on 1920x1200 resolution which is become increasingly more popular.
More VRAM is good aswell your videocard wont have to swap with system memory (is also much faster then swapping).

Fun fact: I used to have 1.5gb of ram working in dual channel: 2x512 + 2x256, worked beautifully. 
When you thought that your old-ass 256mb was of no use already… xD
