Question to developers regarding Source assets

Hi, I’m a mapper for Valve’s Counter-Strike Global Offensive; am I allowed to export Black Mesa’s textures and use them them for CSGO mapping, so long as I don’t claim the textures as my own and give credit where it’s due?

Thanks

Assuming the mod version’s usage rights are still at play, then yes.

Mod textures, yes. Retail textures, no.

What exactly is the retail content licensed under? The license.txt in the retail distribution is still CC-BY-NC 3.0, which is the same as the mod. Which parts of the game does that still apply to?

I need to properly clarify this as we are still a bit unclear. I’ll get back to you guys.

That would be much appreciated.

My query specifically has textures/models in mind, none bearing the Black Mesa logo or anything that could be tied to Black Mesa visually.

I imported some of the lab wall textures and computer props.

It looks like as long as you never make any money from it, we’re okay with it.

What if I inadvertently make money from it? Say, if Valve added the map in a CSGO operation? Would I have to pay royalties?

That’s not inadvertent. That’s direct. We do not allow commercial usage. You would need to get in touch with us before you could do any of that, as we would need to sort it out internally ourselves.

Alright, thank you for the clarification.

I’ll steer clear of BMS assets to be safe.

Cheers!
