I need to make a few observations about your post and I hope that you will not take them in the wrong way.
If your contention is that you are somehow a better gamer than I because you like the crouch-jump mechanic in Black Mesa and I don’t, that’s fine. You can be a better, more skillful gamer than I am. I don’t mind at all and won’t argue about it. I don’t really want to be an outstanding gamer; I really just want to enjoy the games I play, even if I play them poorly. Please, game and be happy.
I am not quite sure what you mean by “this generation of gamers” because I have been playing video games for over 20 years - and believe me, I was not a kid when I started.
You might find the original Black Mesa’s “crouch-jump” mechanic to be “awesome” but, sadly for you yet luckily for me, the devs decided to pretty much get rid of it. I would not enjoy and would make no plans to buy the game if the “crouch-jump” remained, but now I can look forward to an enjoyable game. If you won’t enjoy the game without the original “crouch-jump” then you have my sympathy. But this situation might itself be a zero-sum game. If you like the original mod with the crouch-jump and I didn’t, and if you don’t like the Steam version without it but I do like it, then we each get a version we like, and one that we don’t like. So that’s fair, isn’t it? (And the version that you like is free, whereas the one that I will enjoy is $10. So really, the advantage in this matter is yours. Lucky you!)
I had a screen cap - lost now - that pretty neatly illustrated the problem. At one point in the game, I was outdoors, walking along a riverbed until I reached a chain-link fence (and then needed to go into a drainage pipe or similar.) Now, that chain-link fence across the riverbed was mounted on a concrete slab, let’s say, 15 feet wide. As you faced that fence, the flat surface of the slab on the left was 4 inches higher than the unpaved ground on which I was walking; while on the right side, it was 8 inches above the unpaved ground. I could simply walk up (and then maybe jump up - I don’t recall) on the left side of the slab but to mount the concrete slab on the right side - a mere EIGHT inches up - I needed to crouch-jump.
To me, that’s not an “awesome mechanic”; that’s a nuisance. So I used crouch-jump anytime and every time I needed to jump. If my jump key has been entirely superseded by the two key crouch-jump key combo, I basically end up with a two-key jump key, for no good reason.
At any rate, I felt it was a real impediment to my enjoyment of the game, and am glad it’s gone. If you feel otherwise well, sorry. : (
