Is the Black Mesa Team using a licensed copy of the Source engine? And what programs are being used to create the new levels, models and voices? Just wondering whats powering this revamp of Half Life.
A list of everything being used to create the mod would be impossible to compile. Every developer has their own programs they prefer and use.
At the very least are they using a licensed version of the source engine? And does anyone have any examples of the modeling programs they might be using? I’m starting Computer Animation classes this summer and was just curious about the modeling programs used for this project. Not a list just some examples.
They aren’t using a licensed version of the Source engine.
There is no ‘licensed version’ of the source engine. They’re using a multiple of personal modelling and animation software, together with the Source SDK.

*3DMax
*Blender
If you were to create a original game using the source engine wouldn’t you need to pay valve for using the engine? Like most company are doing with the unreal engine?
And thanks for the examples
How do you think mods are made?
Black Mesa isn’t an original game. It’s a mod. And a free one at that. Hence, no licensing required.
There is. You have to pay for it though.
Black mesa uses the free version available for everyone. Maps are made in hammer which is a part of source sdk. Modeling is done in many various programs. So is the voice recording.
Yea Black Mesa isn’t original so thats why they cant charge for it I understand. But if someone made a space shooter game with the engine and sold it through steam or even somewhere else, how does valve get compensated? The developers of the space shooter game cant just use valves engine and profit from it.
They would have to buy the license. Otherwise Valve would sue them.
So whats the difference between the fee version and the paid one? The free one is only for modding? Or is there extra features with the paid version of the engine?

Not quite the answers you’re looking for, but straight from the horse’s mouth, as it were.
Cool thanks for all the help I guess it would be better to ask the horse straight up. I have some close friends with the skills to make a game but no motivation so I’m trying to learn the ins and outs of the business. Gotta start somewhere…
Thanks again
You can earn money with the licensed version.
If you earn money with the unlicensed version Valve will blow your ass.
Maybe there are code parts in the licensed version which aren’t in the free one but I don’t know.
If you license the engine you get access to the full source code, basically.
I’m not a programmer or modder so would you mind explaining what the source SDK limited to exactly? Whats possible with the full source code that is not with SDK?
With the unlicensed/free copy that you get with any source-powered game you get the full code to the client and server dll files.
I would assume that with a licensed copy you also get access to the code from hl2.exe which loads those other 2 dll files.
EDIT: Oh, and with the licensed version you can also release for multiple platforms (i.e. xbox)
How much money does the Black Mesa team need to release for multiple platforms?
More than they have.
And more than they are willing to make us pay.
