Now I’m thinking the first Portal must have taken place just hours/days after the resonance cascade from HL1. Here’s why:

1. No aliens in the Aperture labs. Didn’t the portal storms flood the entire planet with Xen aliens prior to the combine showing up?

2. Could explain why GLaDOS didn’t know what was “going on up there”. GLaDOS is pretty damn smart, and she knows way more about portals than the guys at Black Mesa did. Maybe she just hadn’t had time to piece together what happened.

3. Could explain why Aperture is deserted. All the scientists decided to get the hell out of dodge, or maybe evacuate to the borealis.

4. Convenient for Valve. The GI article said they were hesitant to link up the two games too much because of the different tones–light-hearted vs. serious. Having the Portal games take place completely outside the HL2 storyline would be a clean way to separate them, while still having them take place in the same universe.

Valve already worked for 2,5 years on it. They know what a “funkiller” is when they notice it, in the beta tests. Hope you know what I mean.

portal 2 is going to get over-hyped and going to suck, i speculate. it’s different than half-life because almost all pc-fags and some console gamers know about half-life, but almost all pc-fags and almost console gamers, even the casual ones, know about portal. The console gamers usually over-hype something until it doesn’t meet expectations.

Well, regarding GLaDOS. It turns out she has been dead for those hundreds of years, and the facility has been being “Maintained” by the personality spheres you saw with the cake at the end of the game. One of them wakes chell up (out of stasis, presumably), and asks her to catch him as he releases from the track, as he would like to explore the world. He leads you out, but while trying to operate a lift to escape, something goes wrong and a bunch of switches are pulled. You find yourself in the courtyard where GLaDOS landed, and she comes back on line, thanks to the random switch pushing that just happened. Queue “Oh, hello. How are you? I’ve been really busy, you know, being dead?”
