Pentium 4 and graphics card: halp!

GuitarJim: thanks for that. From some pokings around before, I came to the conclusion that I should be OK with the 305w from the dimension 5100 - fingers crossed. See e.g.

  • and elsewhere I’ve seen many people say the Dell 305w power supplies have managed OK. It’s got some kind of hideous multi-card input device on the front that someone must have thought business machines need, so I’ll pull the plug on that also.

Thanks again.

How much is the 4760 you want to get? Several months ago, my Geforce 8800 GT incinerated itself and I needed a budget graphics-card fast for graphics and 3D work. I ended up buying a 4850 HD for £80 ($40) brand new and it’s an excellent card for the money! Saying that, the quad-core and 4GB RAM may have boosted performance somewhat.

I’m looking to upgrade around Christmas but so far I’m able to run anything maxed out, even Crysis runs admirably at a solid 30+ on max, DirectX 10. :jizz:

Lol you’ve definitely got the currency conversion wrong, £80 is $126.64USD today according to xe online.

A brand new 4670 in the UK costs about £70 ($110USD). The 4850 is more than £10 better performance wise (i.e. bang for the buck the 4850 is much better) but it’s whether you can find one new now. Newegg has a couple of 4850’s at the $90 mark whereas their 4670’s are around $70.

Remember also that power supply is an issue, the 4850 requires quite a bit more juice which I doubt the existing PSU can supply. That’ll mean even more expense. The Nvidia GT220/240 is in the same price bracket as the 4670 but it’s not as powerful.

I used a 4670 with a 250W power supply on a Pentium D :stuck_out_tongue:

I had upgraded to a 400W, but it died, so i put back the stock power supply in and it worked fine.

Also, it’s probably too late, and I don’t know where you live, but:

SAPPHIRE 100294L Radeon HD 5550 1GB 128-bit DDR2 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card
for 40$ US

could be an interesting deal for you… dunno where the 5550 stands relative to the 4670, though.

The 5550 isn’t as powerful as the 4670, the 5570 is slightly better and costs about the same.

Thanks. When I run out of coffee I’ll know what to do.

Bleh, the deal’s over now anyway :stuck_out_tongue:
