But it was only the previous gen where that became substandard relative to the PC market. Back in the day your monitor was probably 1280-720 or 1024x768, so console and PC resolutions were pretty comparable. Last gen most PC gamers moved to 1080, and this gen a lot of them are going 1440 and beyond which really leaves 720p console games in the dust.
Maybe it should be considered unfair to always compare consoles to PC. It’s not the console’s fault PC technology doesn’t find a reason to stagnate. I understand the frustration as a PC gamer but unless developers stop trying to push visuals on consoles to the point of having to go sub-native to keep performance on the level, people will just have to deal with it or leave it.
At least the PS4 is pushing the 1080p standard quite steadily for now.

Looks like 1280x720. PS3 AA method is a bit blurry in places. The PS3 version seems to be pretty poorly done.
EDIT: should have refreshed the page before posting
Although also back them (say PS2 or PS1 era) console games were also running at lower resolutions. 480p (or maybe i) for the PS2 for most games and even below that for games on the PS1 or N64 (I think Conker ran at something insanely low like 320x200 or something, which was used on PC at some point in the 90s for some people, though Conker came out in 2001)
At the cost of performance generally, which I would consider more important. Ground Zeroes is 1080p 60 fps but it has noticeable graphics issues.
At least CRT TVs always looked good no matter what res.
Front Mission 4 on PS2 ran at 320x244. Of course, reviewers noted the game looked fugly even for the time…
I’ve heard this. I wonder why people don’t actually improve on CRT monitors. You’d think with all the tech we have now people would be able to make CRT monitors smaller.
Eh, no. We’ve moved to LCD because the advantages far outweighed the cons. Slimmer and much lighter TV’s with lower energy consumption vs huge, heavy, hungry monsters of glass and broken backs? Yeah, no contest there.
If anything, it would be cheaper to improve sub-native image quality on LCD panels.
CRTs look good? I honestly find that hard to believe. If you slow it down with a a phone, you can actually watch the scanlines move on those things.
From what I understand their colors are better, they get rid of aliasing better than modern screens without needing aa to be applied to the game, and they were often higher refresh rates than 60Hz.
how many people do you think play games or watch tv through slowed down phone footage
Pretty sure it’s just a fundamental flaw of the tech. CRT stands for Cathode Ray Tube, which is, IIRC from my shitty science class last semester, a tube (full if vacuum or gas, can’t remember which, think the former) that doesn’t something sciencey with electons. So basically you need a long tube no matter what modern tricks and workarounds you implement.
Technological progress is as much about improving existing tech as it is about ditching/replacing dead end tech. CRT, advantages or no, was dead end tech.

I do miss being able to smack bugs on my screen without fear of damaging pixels. CRTs are good for that.
Always preferred PC’s so this is not a surprise to me since I always assumed others did too. Always seen consoles as sort of the lesser alternative, probably since I grew up with PC gaming and always saw how much better games looked on PC with hardware acceleration and such. Guess I’m part of the master race…
STOP POSTING IN PINK PLEASE.
Stop posting in caps.
[COLOR=‘Red’]STOP POSTING IN MAGENTA
After you stop posting in pink.
I wasn’t aware it was against the rules since the rules say nothing about posting in color.
It’s not in the rules but it’s annoying and it makes the mod’s life a little easier if you post in the default color.
Ok, since we’ve established that, lets get back on topic. Kthx.
