PC doesn't boot when the GPU is properly plugged in.

Then raise it off the steel cabinet and see if it works.

Edit: That’s probably the source of the short. But when you don’t know what’s wrong with your computer, you want to do what is referred in my last post:

Then if you’re clueless, that’s when you ask for help.

i have screws that make the motherboard stand a bit out… i’ll go try that now

Hopefully that was the only thing wrong. I took the time when my computer blew up the last time to diagnose it on my own. It was a pain in the ass, but worth it.

That was the next thing I was going to ask, did you use all the brass stand offs for the case/motherboard. They look like this. You may have damaged your motherboard if you didn’t use them and screwed straight into the case.

i didn’t use them in the first place, but i have insterted them now and the PC works great so far! thanks guys!

:fffuuu:

To quote “Life of Brian”, “You lucky bastard!”

holy shit

I didn’t realize you’re this clueless.

This is why I always recommend you fully disassemble an old PC before building your own.

But you’re lucky your PSU has short circuit protection, otherwise that mobo and/or PSU would have been fried for good.

What the fuck dude those standoffs are extremely important, consider yourself lucky you didn’t permanently damage your motherboard. Read the manual before building a computer!

I bought a GTX 460 and had the same problem as you. My fix - I upgraded the PSU to 900w.

…that’s great and all, but his solution was much simpler: install the motherboard standoffs

Yeah, I didn’t read every post until later.

Frankly, I’m wondering how his PC booted at all without those (and didn’t just short out).

well, to my defense, the mounting section in the motherboard said nothing about the standoffs…

to quote Jayne from Firefly; “Anyhow, it all turned out just fine.”
