We tested this patch extensively before it went live. The issue appears to be that some Linux files did not make it from our internal build onto Steam, somehow. 2 of our programmers stayed up extremely late trying to resolve the issue but could not. We’re still looking at it and hope to have it fixed as soon as we possibly can.
We believe the Gluon is appropriately powered for MP. We think perhaps that people have not learned how to properly deal with it yet. In our near year and a half of testing MP we did not think the Gluon was overpowered. It is quite a lot weaker than its HL1 variant. It does less damage. It consumes ammo faster. It does not do splash damage like it did in HL1. It does not have a headshot multiplier like it did in HL1.
We believe the issue was partially that players who got the Gluon were typically also able to arm themselves to the teeth with suit battery, making them very hard to kill as well as extremely powerful. We have made it significantly harder for players to accumulate vast amounts of suit battery (and more in line with HL1), so this will alleviate this balance concern slightly.
Bear in mind that a large portion of our arsenal is able to kill a player in one hit, and yet the Gluon cannot. Engaging a Gluon user head on is a very unwise decision, but he’s just as vulnerable as anyone else to a sneakier approach with a Crossbow, or a .357, or explosives, etc. We will continue to collect data and opinions about it and we can and will change it if it is determined to be too strong, but right now we still believe it is in an okay place.
Good to know you’re looking into it, hope it will get fixed soon.
On another note, after playing a bit on the few Windows servers that are available, i don’t notice much of an improvement at all as far as freezing / stuttering / fps drops go on the client side, please keep this in mind for future updates, the game is very very annoying to play when a lot of players are on due to this.
Quick reminder of PC specs: Win 7 , GTX 780 , FX8350 @ 4.7ghz
Good luck.
Edit: To the above poster saying the Gluon Gun is overpowered, if you are in Europe or don’t mind higher ping come on ★ U N I T E D - G A M E R S ★ [EU] | 31.186.250.106:27070 (when the linux issue is fixed, lol) , players can vote to remove the Gluon Gun on each map here, this feature is custom made by us and we are not aware of any other servers having anything similar.
The Egon is good how it is. Please don’t nerf. And if you are ever going to nerf it I have the perfect suggestion how to do it:
Keep damage, dps etc. the same, but make it impossible to use the longjump if egon is your active weapon. It would make sense because egon and longjump are both backpacks… So you could wear only one backpack at once… You could pick up both, but as soon as you switch to egon, your Longjump-meter disappears from your hud and you can’t do longjumps as long as you have the egon in your hands. As soon as you switch to a different weapon, the Longjump-meter appears on your hud and you are able to do longjumps again. This would make the egon a bit more dependent on the players positioning as it will be almost impossible to dodge explosives (similar to what it’s like in Quake).
The respawn-timer change for armor pickups from 15 to 30 seconds is very welcome. The new weapon canisters are also a very nice change.
But please… I can’t stress this enaugh… Please make item-respawns and chargers EXACTLY like in HL1. What’s the problem?
Great patch!
I believe It is going into a good direction.
especially the updates on the crowbar and tripmine increasing the hitbox size.
Weapon dropped when fragging a player instead of just ammo and the 30seconds respawn time.
Be open for change man I think how it is now is alright.
Makes charges a bit more useful, especially in team games.
With the 30seconds before it refills there is something to control now.
focus on other stuff and see how it goes.
Same thing here, unfortunately. We have a LANFest event this weekend and hopefully it can be fixed then. Some potential new black mesa gamers falling through the cracks
I mentioned this on the Steam forums, but I seem to be stuck in some kind of “Validation” loop with this update. I managed to get the Dedicated Server just fine, but Black Mesa itself won’t start downloading at all. It is constantly “Validating,” taking about 2 minutes at a time to reach 100% and then starting over. I’ve restarted Steam twice, and it just picks up where it left off. I’ve tried pausing the download and manually doing Verify Integrity of Game Cache, no issues are found.
FWIW, my virus scanner quarantined vlocalize.exe again, as it did with the first patch. I told it to restore the file, however. Maybe Steam is getting hung up on the fact that the file was gone, but now it’s back again?
EDIT: Took the nuclear option and deleted and re-downloaded the game. Works fine now.
Just wanted to pass along a big thank you to guys for this update. You all are my heroes. All those rebalancing tweaks have made a huge difference in enjoyment for me, especially the Apache. Chon I believe you were discussing in another thread how you had planned to make it harder for the Apache to target Freeman when he’s underwater at the dam scene, and sure enough, one can now reasonably evade the Apache by doing so. I think this is great because it gives the player an alternative to taking the chopper head-on (or if you’re like me and your aim with the Tau cannon is miserable and you have no choice but to “RUN LIKE A MOFO” as another user once described it )
Fantastic work as always gentlemen. I, too, was sad to hear about the dynamic lights on muzzles/explosions being removed, but fingers crossed it might ultimately get resolved.
Does this include a fix for the AI bug that causes Alien Slaves to just stand there instead of attacking you? At one point in Office Complex, I was able to walk right up to two Alien Slaves and they just stood there frozen.
First off, a major salute to all the developers. The retail release is leaps and bounds an improvement in quality over the mod from what I’ve seen so far, and the mod was already a great experience.
Like others with Norton anti-virus, I am unable to download this update or play the game; I am stuck in this loop of downloading and validating that doesn’t end.
I have restored the vlocalize.exe that was removed, to no avail. I’m still stuck in this endless cycle.
Can someone please tell me how to proceed? Is there a way to re-install the game without losing my savegames?
I’ve been at this for over an hour; all I want to do is play this amazing game
Man that sucks you’re having that issue! It sounds like it will keep re-occuring after every Black Mesa update until Norton fixes the false-positive… but you can also Whitelist the offending file. I don’t have Norton but I found this from another thread:
“Open norton and click the performance tab. Look on the timeline for where it was detected. Mouse over it and click on view details on view details. Then click on the instance in your security history listed as vlocalize.exe. Click on it then under recommended Action click “options” then click “restore & Exclude” then tell it okay. After that verify your install then update. If you get stuck in a verification/validation loop then delete the local files and reinstall.”
We’re still working on Steam Cloud integration, but your save games should be in Steam/SteamApps/Common/Black Mesa/SAVE/ … If you have to delete/reinstall the game, first copy that entire save folder and stick it back in the same spot after the game redownloads, and that should preserve your saves. Worst case, if you do somehow lose your saves, you can open the console ingame and type sv_unlockedchapters “99” and restart the last chapter you tried.
Sorry for all your troubles, I much prefer Windows Defender to Norton Antivirus myself. Let us know if there’s anything else we can do.
