Over Population Discussion

But he does make a valid point. Eventually overpopulation will become a serious issue, at which point we’ll either have to find more space or the entire human race is just going to collapse.

He has a ridiculous point: he’s saying we should ignore the problem and just let human civilisation fall apart.

In the near term future, we will fail to control global warming, leading to a chain reaction of events that leads to all the ice on Antarctica and Greenland to melt into the ocean.

This will kill or displace upwards of 2 billion people along earths coastlines and islands as the ocean levels rise upwards of 10 feet.

This will also lead to massive changes in earth’s various biomes, turning some areas (such as the UK) into tundra and others into arid deserts. This will kill probably another billion or so as governments collapse and those in poverty die of starvation and thirst.

Mass emigrations will begin to those places on earth unnaffected or aided by the shift in biomes (such as non-coastal Canada), causing war and martial law to break out. Tent cities will form in said areas, and many more will die from starvation and disease.

In the end, approximately half the world’s population will die from the effects of global warming and its aftermath.

You want population control? Thats one way of accomplishing it. And that is exactly where we are heading at break neck, suicidal speed. If you live on the coast or on an island, I would get away from the ocean as fast as you can.

I live in basically the perfect area for what is coming. My climate will shift from temperate parkland to tropical wetland. Winter will get shorter and shorter, and rain will increase. Downside is I will have to stake my claim and keep others from taking my stuff when the climate refugees start arriving.

Ya, but the only reason people object to this is because of morality. He’s not really ignoring the problem, his suggestion is still a solution. An “inhuman” solution that will only ever come to be in the most desperate situation, but an effective solution that is just as likely to solve the issue of overpopulation as anything else.

Though I hope it doesn’t come to that, it is inevitable.

If there is one trait of humanity that is the cause of said disaster is it GREED.

We could stop it from happening right now, but we won’t, because the developing nations of the world want to be as rich as the Western World, and the Western World does not want to sacrifice its wealth and power in order to lead the world to true sustainability.

And so we will sit and smile and twiddle our thumbs and toes until its too late and anything we do will only slightly mitigate the destruction and loss of life that is to occur.

My hope is the civilization that rises from the ashes will be better educated about the risks of greed and the fragility of our planet, but there are other forces at work that may prevent such an enlightenment, such as the well documented proliferation of organized religion during times of disaster and strife. Said organizations may jump at the opportunity to delare such an event a “judgment from god” and I fear that many otherwise intelligent people will fall into the throes of armageddon lust, praying for the end times and hoping humanity will be destroyed so they can go to the shiny place in the sky.

Time will tell, I suppose.

Interesting concept of “solution” you got there, champ:

“We have a problem, what should we do?”

“I know, lets not solve the problem! Case closed!”

If we get population under control then all these effects won’t disappear, but they will be lessened and postponed.

In all seriousness, I think we need a good version of Hitler. Somebody inspiring and powerful to take control of everything, but unlike Hitler, do the right thing with the power.

People often use this as a case for space colonisation. While it is a good idea, we can’t be reliant on it. Consider colonising Mars. It may very well take decades or centuries to get it properly populated, all the time while the population of Earth is still growing. Even if we colonise the entire planet we’ll (very roughly) only double our available living space, and the human race can double it’s population very quickly indeed.

Realistically we need to reduce population growth, not find more room.

I’m not saying that’s the right answer, just the only alternative to reducing what we already have.

Sigg’ed.

We need to pass the time until then.

That’s not the reason we should rule out space colonization, we should rule out space colonization because it’s a joke. Even if we could ever make the technology it’d be billions of dollars for very little land that probably wouldn’t even be self sufficient. Basically, if we ever do get the technology, the only ones that are gonna afford it is gonna be the rich. It’ll be their new version of a summer home.

The fact that you could make a statement like this terrifies me.
's a damn good thing nobody here will actually ACT on what they’re preaching.

I believe that in 2012, the population will get a lot smaller. Not in the way that everyone thinks. I think that there would be so many stupid people who believe in 2012 that they’ll do very stupid things and get themselves killed. So in the end, stupid people die and the smart people live on.

What forum are we on again?

I never said we should rule it out, I just said it wasn’t a solution for overpopulation. It is actually vital that we colonise other planets before this happens:

Dude, how fucking fast must that meteorite be going to smash through the fucking earth and NOT STOP?

And on another note. Would it still be a meteorite? Or would it be a meteor for the few seconds it was blasting through the planet and - once it’s exited the atmosphere - a meteorite again?

And why is it glowing like it’s burning up in the picture? Clearly it’s already out of the atmosphere.

This picture doesn’t make much sense at all.

Like I mentioned in the chat, if the main problem is stupidity and overpopulation how about we just rip off the safety labels and instructions off of everything and let the problem solve itself?:awesome:

Founded in 2004, Leakfree.org became one of the first online communities dedicated to Valve’s Source engine development. It is more famously known for the formation of Black Mesa: Source under the 'Leakfree Modification Team' handle in September 2004.
