I imagine they aren’t part of the military or the navy. Bit like in Men in Black, they are a secret organisation.
Even if you’re the highest in command, if you are not an officer, you are not a sir. If you are a corporal, you are called corporal by all, including subordinates. The same is true for all enlisted personel of any branch of the US military.
they seem more like a elite millitary team.
Why are they based out of a military base then? You’d think they would be based out of a secret HQ like the MIB if they were a secret organization like the MIB.
Also, in the USA, there are five branches of the military. The Navy is one of them.
Not in the slightest. Hope when he comes back in EP3, and he orders a rebel to do something he’ll say “sorry, corpral, I dont give a shit, and frankly, hate ‘Kevlar’ from the black mesa forums.”
Aside from the previous examples, soldiers in OP4 sometimes say “Lets go Marines!”.
Since when was Opposing Force not canon? Valve themselves have stated that unless they themselves contradict it in the future (unlikely) or until they themselves bring the events of Op4 into the present story, it is neither canon, or not canon.
I myself believe that it will be canon in the future giving how Valve has stated that they would like to revisit the material sometime and because the story of Op4 was not only OKed by Valve writers, but actually written by the Valve writers themselves. So unless they make a huge unnecessary retcon where Black Mesa isn’t blown up it will be canon in the near future. My reasoning for this is simple: either they make no mention of it again and wrap the story up without it, thus cementing it in the lore by not contradicting it. Or (more likely due to its popularity) they will revisit the events of Op4 in the future storyline. :freeman:
It’s not cannon because the character Adrian Shephard, the new weapons and NPCs were made by gearbox and they did not give a shit of info about them.
Edit: plus read this: https://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Canon here is said that oppossing force is canon unless stated otherwise, but Valve doesn’t give a shit about the expansion info because the biggest part were made by gearbox so, until gearbox doesn’t give some info it is canon but also it isn’t canon. Valve has to confirm that.
It can be either canon or not depending on what you feel like. However, this means it can’t really be used as evidence in discussions.
But the story of the game wasn’t just made up by Gearbox. The writers of Half-Life also chipped in and OKed the entire thing. And besides, I never said it was cannon, but it isn’t not canon either. It is in-between. Valve holds all the rights behind the Adrian Shephard character and the events of Op4. This has been stated in an email questionnaire sent to Valve, and then posted on the Half-Life.net forums. Don’t believe me? Look it up in their archived section.
I believe Marc Laidlaw said it was akin to giving the story to gearbox, and getting it back with a few extra kinks in it. (Which would be Race X, mainly)
It can if the discussion is entirely based on the “ambiguously canon” stuff.
How can they all not be Marines? The equipment you use is of Marine Corps issue, only thing that needs to be changed is the Apache - Cobra(besides the m4/mp5). The training part of the game takes place in Boot Camp, not Basic Training. The V-22 it’s self is used ONLY by the USMC.
and forgot the little known fact that it says “Cpl. Adrian Shepard United States Marines, Special Forces”(Force Recon) in the beginning of the game. So it’s safe to assume that everyone else in Camouflage is a US Marine(not the same as a soldier btw).
Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t they called HECU Marines, not just HECU?
They are really called Hazardous Environtment Combat Unit. But they ussually also add marines. I do belive they say marine just because to make the player notice that they are part of the army.
See the two pictures I posted a while ago? I wouldn’t necessarily say that all of the HECU are marines, but the chances of Shep’s whole squad being Marines is pretty high.
The Marines and the Army are two of the five branches of the US military. Basically they are two almost completely different things.
