On A Rail Uncut - Re-Adding Cut Areas/Scenes (Expansion Project)

Possible they even brought materials by rail to MAKE the base in the past , if u see the immense big facility!

U can use whatever is possible on the rail, maybe a big tank with gasoline and such, food and supplies,…

I think normally there is a lot of activity overthere, so u can also place death workers and such, broken wagons, broken rails, goods all over the place…

And that’s what Propper is for. Make a brush train first, then use Propper to turn the entire thing into a model.

That’s be cool, but unfortunately we don’t have the worker models. BMS devs decided to exclude them from the game. RIP ‘Gus’ :[

Actually, I’ve been looking into modelling a little bit lately. If I can figure it out, maybe I can hex a guard model with an alternate skin to be used as worker corpses throughout OARU! (that’s a big maybe though, and it’ll only work if text is on board too).

UPDATE: Hexed the model, all I need to do is figure out how to make it read a new set of textures (this is proving to be a bit more difficult).

I suppose Black Mesa would have brought construction materials by trains, seeing how the Lambda Reactor doesn’t look old at all compared to the rest of the facility, and that the Biodome Complex in Sector E is relatively new and unachieved in certain parts (in Opposing Force mostly). Also, they could have been shipping out products, but I don’t think a research facility would be mass producing. However whatever equipment and materials the facility needed could have been brought by train.

Btw if adding a regular railroad to this part is still possible, I’d like to see some custom sign stating its connection to the New Mexico Railroad Line, like in Blue Shift.

So New Mexico, we think at Area51…

So it’s possible they transport alien stuff to Area51 by rail

Well, that wasn’t so hard once I figured it out, hell hexing is pretty easy.

Workers!

(ignore the somewhat awkward posing, the original security model is like that too, it’s just improper rigging to hl2’s animations on black mesa’s part)

Now to wait for Text’s opinion on workers in OAR.

Nice!!!

Just an idea of death workers on the trainyard, so don’t shoot me Text! :fffuuu:

Nice job with the workers, Mr. Someguy!

One question: Do you think you could add a Black Mesa logo on the worker’s shirt?

That wouldn’t be hard at all, it’d take like a minute. But for now, I’m waiting on Text’s opinion before I go ahead (I was also going to de-mint the belt-buckle, side-effect of the recolour). Besides, I don’t want to derail the thread too much. Not that it matters, he’ll just reclaim his thunder with his very presence.

how about a helmet

There is a construction helmet prop which could be placed near some of the corpses. For an actual helmet, the security helmet is still bodygrouped to the model, but I don’t think it looks very ‘worker’ ish personally.

I know I said I wasn’t gonna work on it 'till I got approval, but I did anyway.

Reflective tape!

Construction helmets near the body would be enough, I’d imagine. They wouldn’t realistically stay on anyway, so it’s good. If Text likes the idea, I think that re-skin is wonderful. A couple corpses here and there would give a little life to that part of the facility, making it clear it is used a lot, as opposed to most of OAR.

Make the shirt less saturated and remove the stripe from the pants.

Noted, although I kinda like the stripe, it matches the shirt (and getting rid of it would require me to try and manually match the pant colour). The shirt I intentionally made bright because construction workers often wear bright colours to stay visible whist working around other people who are using heavy vehicles and machinery (the colour scheme was inspired by a mix of janitor and construction worker). If it’s too much I can tone it down, though.

Still waiting on Text’s opinion before I proceed with any design changes (really hoping for the best!)

I think you guys have gotten a little too enthusiastic about the proposition of an enormous trainyard with massive trailers and containers. There isn’t enough room for that. It’s really that simple. You’re probably thinking a bit too big here.

Think of it this way - I’ve been stuck on B2 for a very long time. There’s limited space, and brush limit. I’m already very close to it - I had to delete 2 large side tunnels to make the map even compile.

My question was more along the lines of - would you rather have 3 docking stations with small trams and small cargo, or 2 docking stations with larger trams and larger (containerised, as Someguy was saying) cargo. I simply don’t have the space to expand this any further, I’m afraid. Some of the tracks pictured will be running into tunnels and others will be running into the skybox and into the distance. There will be hints that it will connect to a larger rail system, but no actual large system in place. I don’t have the resources for it.

Would the tug (the yellow) tram be sufficient to transport the container trucks that we see in OaR? Would that work? There are no good actual train models to use, so I would either have to use the yellow tram at the front or none at all.

Again, look at this picture. Would you prefer it stays how it is now, in terms of the docking/unloading stations, or would you rather have 2 tracks with larger trains? I’m not asking if you think I should expand the yard to make it expansive and a hub for all transport in Black Mesa. I’ll say it right now - it’s not doable and if it was I still probably wouldn’t be willing to do it.

I most likely will not introduce an APC in B2. I’ve already “stolen the thunder” for the TOW’s reveal, I don’t really want to go any further than that. Instead I will just have a HECU 50 Cal emplacement. Same job really, and there aren’t many places in Black Mesa where the HECU actually use 50 Cals against you.

As for the RPG thing, I’m not doing that either. Not because the player can attain the RPG - the RPG automatically disappears after an RPG Marine dies, but because in the map after B2 © your tram is destroyed by an RPG. Don’t want to steal the thunder for that cool bit either.

I’m going to move the road to give me more room on the straight part, but I haven’t done it yet as the road is connected to MANY parts of the map and is a fairly significant overhaul.

It will also be covered, eventually.

Not done yet, but will do once I’ve finalized the track layout. It’s still in its infancy.

I like it, and would happily use it (full credit of course) provided it’s up to scratch. It does need a fair amount of work though - the current iteration really does look simply like a recolour rather than a new skin, which I assume is because you haven’t worked on it all that much yet. I also don’t think that style of shirt is fitting at all for a construction worker - looks much too smart. Work on it until you’re happy with it, and find out how flexible you can make it - office workers throughout OaR would be welcome too if possible - as a new model though of course. I’ll let you know what I think at that point. If you can pull it off, it would be a) really appreciated, and b) really cool! The Black Mesa dev team might have had objections about using office workers in Black Mesa but it doesn’t bother me at all. Why intentionally make the world less sensible?

In terms of the progress for the rest of the mod - I’m actually going to Greece for a week now, so you won’t hear from me for a little while. I’m currently copying all my BM files over to my laptop so I can still work on stuff while I’m gone, but I wouldn’t expect that I’d have much time for that. See you guys in a week!

https://wiki.blackmesasource.com/images//c/c3/03-c1a2_release12_002.jpg yeah they removed them for unknown reason, maybe they will be re-added later on.

Maybe the scientists are office workers part-time and that’s why they all have to wear those ridiculous ties.

I think that would make more sense than having an actual train anyway. Like jessiestorm said, if a train is there, you would also need to give some clue as to why it’s needed. Black Mesa could have used trains at some point in its history, but now it seems like an extremely self-sufficient, all-in-one facility that doesn’t need much outside support.

It’s mostly self-sufficient, but even though Black Mesa is practically a small city, it still needs to import. A lot. Goods like food, water, wood, metal, electronics, and much more would have to be imported. Just like in the city.

I have a mixed opinion, I like the current layout, but it seems kind of bare. Adding train cars would help, but they might not mesh with the tram layout. I guess I’m leaning toward trains, if only because trains are pretty cool.

Like I had already mentioned, Blue Shift used one of those trams in the trainyard section to move a flatbed car with 2 shipping containers on it. So I think a yellow tram hooked up to the box cars (or whatever you decide to use) would be acceptable.

I missed the autogun ‘puzzles’ from Half-Life. It’s a shame, but fully understood.

I wish I could call you correct, but the truth is I’m just not very good at texturing, and I wont be upset that you don’t like it in it’s current state because I know I’m below average. I can only work off existing patterns for the most part, hence why it looks like a recolour (it mostly is, really). For the style of shirt, I’m not sure how you could really change it all that much without altering the model, because shirt itself has a fairly clear silhouette and I think it’d look strange as anything else. That said, long sleeve button up shirts aren’t uncommon with construction workers.

Anyway, If someone else wants to make one better, or improved mine, I’ll gladly hand off all the files (including mdl). ysrael seems to know what he’s talking about, I might ask him (or wait for him to read this, I think I’ll do that). As for Office Workers, I know someone who does model hacking. I might be able to get him to agree to make a scientist bottom (with labcoat bit removed, assuming he can do that) + guard top for office workers.

In the end I have mixed feelings, I’m glad you like the progress so far, but I feel what you’re asking may be above my abilities. So as I said, if anyone wants to take a go at it, then please do.

That sounds interesting, I hope you enjoy yourself!

But the question is how high above the rest of the desert is this train yard? Because I know a 50-car freight trains would find it extremely difficult to make that kind of climb. I could expect those kinds of things on the ground floors, and nowhere else.
The other thing is this trainyard is a bit too small to support those kinds of trains. Methinks, at least.

Normally they use more than two locomotives…
