Aww come on… you had already made up your mind and all!
Well i think that obese is the exact opposite as anorexia, and everyone seems to call that a disease… so why not.
Obesity is no disease, Harlequin Ichtyosis is a disease. And if you survive it, you gain all of your weight in ever-generating layers of skin.
Anorexia is a mental condition that pretty much tells you you’re too fat, even though weigh less than SoaringScout’s brain.
Obesity is… well, it’s just being overweight. Much like how some people can be really skinny, without having anorexia.
I’m sure there’s an actual mental condition that tells you to eat, eat, eat and eat (probably called instinct)… and then eat some more. I think this is called bigorexia (no, this is not a pun). But that’s not what obesity is.
I’m slightly overweight, even though I really don’t eat that much (and mostly healthy (or “not unhealthy”) + I go for a 3 mile run every 2 days. All this does for me, is keep me at the same weight forever. I have no idea how to drop weight, apart from drinking nothing but water and eating 1 apple a day.
If your brain doesn’t tells you you’ve had enough, you could eat until you couldn’t fit anymore in your stomach.
@ Bolteh: Bigorexia is an obession with becoming large and muscly, not becoming large as in obese. People with bigorexia forsake meals, work, sleep, and even sex to spend time at the gym.
I used to be pretty chubby at about ages 8-11. thankfully that’s no longer the case.
Oh :<
Looks like Sassy speaks from personal experience.
I feel your pain, Sassy. My ex fiance suffers from bulimia. Which is the disease that killed off our relationship, actually.
Just wanted to pop in and say that Sugar and Carbohydrates are causing the obesity epidemic. Having 7-10 servings of grains at the bottom of the food pyramid is an absolute joke.
Going to Mickey D’s doesn’t make you fat because of the hamburger. Its the bun, giant pop, and fries that getcha.
The farmer’s diet is killing us all, basically, cause guess what. WE AREN’T FARMERS.
Our bodies cannot support the gluttonous amount of sugar we pour down our throats on a daily basis.
If you don’t believe me, have fun with your Diabetes and Heart Disease in 10-40 years.
I have lost 50 pounds (so far, still going) by simply removing sugar from my diet. I don’t even go to the gym. I sit on my ass all day and eat steaks ,eggs ,seafood and cheese and copious amounts of fat and vegetables and lose weight without even trying.
I even make my own bread and desserts, by, you know, cooking. The bread is made with flax (I use it mostly for hamburger buns) and most of the desserts such as cakes, cookies use either almond or coconut flour, with splenda as a sugar substitute.
It is by far the easiest way to lose weight I can think of. I seriously feel like I’ve found the cure for obesity all up ins.
Of course its difficult to convince others to do it. Mostly because they are addicted to sugar and even the thought of giving up the breads and pasta and cookies they have grown up with makes them cringe.
Also there has been a huge campaign on the part of the grain farmer lobby to get rid of the whole low carb lifestyle (as it threatens thier profits, you see). They have spread negative propoganda far and wide about the ‘dangers’ of eating like our ancestors did for, I dunno, a couple million years (which btw only apply to people with kidney disease). They were even powerful enough where I live (canada) to force manufacturers to remove the [low carb] label from thier products, which makes it quite difficult to find healthy foods here (besides veggies and such).
Its kind of annoying, but I can order special stuff (like sugar free ketchup and special baking mixes etc) online for decent prices, so its not an insurmountable obstacle.
Anyway if you guys have any questions about the paleolithic eating regimen just ask, I’m pretty much an expert on the subject now.
^I’m tempted to say cool story bro^
But this man speaks the truth. Too many carbs aren’t good for you bro.
Being fat sucks. :’(
I am fat but I am not overweight, I just don’t do much, so what I eat mainly gets turned into fat. Saying that, I go to the gym twice a week and walk my dog loads.
I suppose I’ll chime in on this one. Let me start off by saying I’ve been morbidly obese. My BMI was 64, which means at 6’3", I was 530lbs. There were a lot of things that contributed to that condition. I don’t have statistics but I do have my personal experience.
- I was taught to always clean my plate, and that carbohydrates were healthy. As such, I ate a lot of starchy foods like bread and pasta.
- I lived below the poverty level for a long time. Fast food restaurants can give you a 500 calorie meal for under $1, that’s pretty enticing when you’re struggling for food.
- I- and several of my family members- have a condition where we don’t feel satiated after eating a full meal. It certainly contributed to my morbid obesity.
About two years ago I had gastric bypass. It saved my life, and since then everything has changed. The surgery replaced the feeling of satiaty with physical pain(I couldn’t eat more than a pudding-cup’s worth of food before it hurt). That only got me down so far, and in order for me to lose more I had to change my lifestyle completely.
If we want to fix the obesity problem, we all have to understand that as humans we evolved to gain weight in times of plenty. That’s 2-3 million years of evolution- it’s not going to be wiped away without active thought and consideration on everyone’s part. We all need to find our level of food intake and exercise in order to avoid obesity. We all need to get educated on it, but people won’t if they don’t see the that the benefits outway the costs. I certainly did.
I blame obesity on the politically correct movement, parents using food and candy to make their kinds feel better, and computers.
Political Correctness - Originally kids teased people for being fat and it drove home the basic understanding that being fat was something to avoid. Sure it caused problems like bulemia and the like, but that could have been addressed by making it more public that binge diets and throwing up don’t really help you lose weight properly. “tired of gettign teased, fatty? Well, take it out on that punching bag for an hour. Thirsty? Don’t drink a fucking soda, have some water, it’ll actually refresh you better and it’s FREE.”
Food = Feel Good - This is something almost all parents do, and it’s the stupidest thing in the world. The basic emotional impact of things is very easily retained from childhood. Things that comforted you then usually still comfort you now, whether it be attention, a hug, or food. If parents made a point to comfort their kinds with healthy food or some good activity, then if they got depressed, they would be more likely to seek out those healthy activities that would actually improve their life and actually DO something to help themselves feel better instead of just moping around, eating, getting fatter and having less energy and thus feeling even MORE depressed about it.
Computers - Lets face it. Computers are a part of our lives now, from our work to our hobbies and trying to get a physical workout while at one is next to impossible. I got my first laptop when I was about 16 and my average daily level of physical activities took a sharp nosedive shortly thereafter. Wireless access killed it the rest of the way and it’s only through sheer stubborn pride in staying in shape that I convince myself to keep to a regular exercise routine.
I think I technically fall into an overweight range Wiifit considers it obese(210lbs at just under 6’) but only about 20lbs of that actually seems to be body fat. Both my parents are overweight though, so I don’t want to let myself slip into that and get to a point where I can’t work my way back down to a reasonable weight again.
Me, I’m Far from Obese, If it weren’t for the fact that I have a high metabolism I’d probably BE obese.
EDIT
and I agree with the people that say that culture is kinda producing obesity. What with high-calorie foods being the more readily available and often cheaper choice. I work at a grocery store and more often the prices on more healthy foods is undeniably higher than junk foods.
I blame sugar.
I blame high-fructose corn syrup.
Edit:
And in my case, medications too.
I’ve posted before in this thread, but I might as well reiterate a little.
One thing you guys should understand is its not about calories and its not about how much you eat.
Its not even that much about being sedentary.
Lack of activity does contribute to weight gain, but only in people eating the wrong type of food.
Activity makes you healthier (aka it improves general health and well-being. A skinny guy that sits around all day can still be very unhealthy), but a lack of it does not realistically contribute to being overweight or obese. There are literally thousands of examples of overweight people who are very active, as well as countless examples of native populations that had a very active lifestyle before and after contact with western civilizations, the only difference being that after we came, a large portion suddenly got obese (Guess what the indigenous populations lacked, and when they discovered it traded there goods for it? White Flour and Sugar).
You guys can feel guilty for not moving around more, sure. The human body was designed for extended periods on your feet and occasionaly a fast run and a heavy lift. Does that justify extreme workouts in the gym? No. Mild but continuous bouts of activity followed by extended periods of R&R is what our bodies are designed for. Not sprinting everyday or tearing our muscles on a continuous basis.
I realize this is contrary to what most of you have heard from your parents and authorities growing up (the same authorities that now hand out sugar saturated chocolate milk to kids and have the balls to call it ‘healthy’) but its true.
Obesity (and heart disease for that matter) are caused by Refined Sugars and Starches, period.
HFCS is doubly bad because of the way it is metabolized in your liver (Very similar to how ethanol is metabolized FYI). Don’t think you have much HFCS in your diet? Think again. Its in your bread, its in your ice cream, its in everything. Check the labels.
Also check the science. The entire lipid hypothesis is based upon bad science. The entire way we are told be should be eating is based on bad science. I feel exceedingly ashamed of the scientific community when I look at the failure of what they call ‘food science’ today. Its based upon the will of a few men with far to much pride, and the burden of the collective wisdom of the masses, which now "knows’ that saturated fats are bad, and “knows” that bread is healthy, and “knows” that a calorie is a calorie is a calorie. If you weren’t following along, all of those things are factually wrong.
I really don’t see the problem with losing weight. You gain fat by not using most of the energy you’re taking in. Simply use up more energy through exercise or don’t take so much in and you won’t get overweight.
Admittedly there are complications through the way food is processed nowadays and other chemicals we ingest, but at its core the majority of obesity cases are really just a supply/demand problem.
