For the people who are unaware (foreigners mostly), a Muslim mosque is being constructed near Ground Zero, site of the 9/11 terorist attacks. It is being supported by Mayor Bloomberg and President Obama, citing freedom of religion. There have been mixed reports of the Mosque opening on 9/11/11.
Now, I have no problem with the mosque itself. Islam as a whole was not the cause of the attacks, and it’s a shame the actions of a small group of extremists automatically made all Muslims evil terrorists in the eyes of the American majority. They have every right to place their mosque anywhere they want. Yes, the area is sensitive. Living half-an-hour from the city, I know firsthand the tension in the area that still stands because of the events of that fateful day. But sensitivity cannot overpower the basic rights guaranteed by the US, no matter the tragedy.
That being said, if the rumors are confirmed and the opening day IS on 9/11/11, that’s just blatantly and purposefully offensive. If that’s the case, I certainly take issue with it, but it is unconfirmed at this point, so I will hold my tongue.
What say you?
