I see a major flaw in this plan.
By the time the shuttle reaches Mars, there will not be enough genetic diversity on it to allow a colony to survive, due to humanity being violent and stupid. They will rip each other apart, probably only a few years into the voyage, if that.
I doubt it. They’re choosing trained astronauts, not your garden variety trailer trash.
Why is it people just automatically assume we are horrible people who will fuck everything up?
If you think it makes you sound learned and philosophical…it doesn’t.
Of course, only the best. Thank you for pointing this out.
Because of you…
read before you post plox
The reality here is that if anyone is to go to mars, odds are they are going to lose quite a few years of their total lifespan, on top of access to everyone who they ever met. It seems to me it would be best to just have a very extended stay on the planet, since you’re going to need transport back eventually anyway.
Also this. A thousand times this.
We’ve known about Charon for a long time. In Mass Effect, what we know now as Charon is an ice covered Mass Relay. BioWare used some real stuff in their fiction.
So you can watch the Earth being destroyed in 2012 from the outside :3
Hmm… Flying to Mars in four months…sounds interesting. Never coming back… sounds bad.
I guess the first thing to do on mars is building up a place to live and then plant stuff to produce oxygen for that place. There are over 70million people on the world who know how to raise up a farm .
Where can you find a good place?
Where do you get your water/food?
You will die.
no need to be in mars you could watch that from the iss
It probably won’t mean anything if what people think the Mayans thought would happen really does happen.
If you had read the article you would know the supplies will come from Earth.
EDIT:
Seriously, now, being one of the first humans to step on Mars surely sounds exciting. Staying there for your entire life, well, maybe for an astronaut, but not for me. Problem is there is a high chance on failure, you might die during the trip, or on Mars for some yet unknown reason after any amount of time.
Good side is the ships should be sterilized so Earth’s sicknesses would not exist in Mars.
Yes, get the HIV positive people there! They would not die!
How would people adapt to Mars’ gravity though? Would the people have to wear spacesuits 24/7?

Doesn’t Mars have a similar gravity compared to Earth?
You only have to wear spacesuit on the Moon because the gravity is too low, I don’t think that is the case with Mars.
Because History has taught us that this is, 99% of the time, true. Hitler was a horrible person. The German people fucked up by being enchanted by his speeches and not reading his book, and as a result, not realizing he was a horrible person.
Well, good, because that wasn’t my intention. Just wanted to point out my opinion.
Whoops. Missed that part. Thanks for pointing it out.
You have to wear a spacesuit on the moon because you can’t breathe there… Same with Mars. Mars has stronger gravity than the moon. You could live just fine there. They’re going to be sending “buildings” in modules similar to that of the ISS. You won’t get a mansion but you’re not going to live on the Martian surface without somewhere to stay.
