I agree with you there, but I also think that there’s not a single player who’s willing to run towards a fight where there’s 50 marines shooting at 5 heavy weapons grunts and a lot of Vorts 
I think I’d just sit back and enjoy the majority of the fight, untill the biggest part has been taken out and the Osprey is just dropping marines from time to time.
i think gun-toting vorts fighting gun-toting marines, scientists, barneys, HEV-suit clad unnamed scientists, and robots would look absolutely awesome (not to mention district nine-like). I second any motion to put a vortigaunt player model into this game mod/mode. as for the penguin player model, I played Half-life deathmatch once where penguins where an option to play as and from that point on I thought it was a hilarious idea to have penguins, WITH GUNS btw, shooting regular players.
I only want to play as zombie or new hecu model.

On a serious note, I wouldn’t say no to something like ariel combat with a manta, sounds dumb but meh. I’m trying.
I think some sort of just pure alien battle would be fun, say controllers, Vorts, squids, zombies (With boosted health to even things out), faster houndeyes. etc etc, just all on seperate teams using the normal abilities.
I also think server admins should be capable of playing the G Man just to kick ass as a invulnerable teleportin’ wind up.

Could you also port over the old models? Im a minority of a game that, in its own right, is a minority - but I love the old models, each one has “character” and more unique. They basically use the same animation skeleton as the older HLDM models.
Do add more than just one Zombie model. I love playing as zombie.
Also, don’t forget to put a client model of yourself so you can see your feet and legs when you look at the ground(Just like Left 4 dead). Do this for both SP and MP.
It wasn’t in HL1 (or any other HL for that matter) so is not going to be in BM.
